This moist and delicious spiced crumb cake is chock-full of apples and walnuts. What a creative idea to serve for brunch or the perfect afternoon treat.

Makes 1 Square Cake
You’ll Need
- 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- 9 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 large egg
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 3 cups diced peeled tart green apples (such as Granny Smith)
- 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, plus 2 tbsp for sprinkling on top
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, plus 2 tbsp for sprinkling on top
Prep and Cook
- 1Preheat oven to 375°F.
Lightly butter and flour a square baking pan and set aside. - 2In a large bowl, combine sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla.
Stir in diced apples.
In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, baking soda, and sea salt.
Using a wooden spoon, gradually fold flour mixture into wet ingredients.
Stir in chopped walnuts.
Pour mixture into prepared pan and smooth top with a spatula.
Sprinkle top with remaining walnuts and 1 tbsp sugar. - 3Bake until cake is brown and crusty on top and tester inserted into centre comes out clean, about 45 minutes.
Cool cake in pan on rack then cut into square pieces.
