There are lots of great reasons to visit Winnipeg but, if your trip is event-focused, chances are you’ll be catching a concert or a hockey game at the MTS Centre. With a capacity of over 16,000 for concerts, all the top artists stop here when touring Western Canada. And the MTS Center is home ice for the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets and the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, so the rink is always rocking during hockey season.
Luckily for those traveling to Winnipeg to catch a show or a game, there’s cool stuff to do outside of the rink via an easy walk or short drive.
Arena air doesn’t always seem the freshest, so, fortunately, the Millennium Library Park is literally across the street from the MTS Centre. The large green space is the perfect place to relax and lay before a big game or show and, if you can remember where you put your library card, bring it with you! As the main branch of the Winnipeg Public Library, Millennium Library has a beautiful reading terrace that features a solar glass wall that’s four stories tall.
Here’s a tip: Patrik Laine jerseys are expensive, but you’ll have a better chance finding your little beauty a hockey sweater that won’t cost more than your tickets if you venture away from the arena. Portage Place Shopping Centre is celebrating its 30th birthday this year and is home to over 90 shops, restaurants, and services. And in the chilly winter months, you can access downtown via Winnipeg’s skywalk system.
In Winnipeg, a trip to the Railway Museum is made that much more fun since it’s located inside Winnipeg’s historic Union Station. And if you’re arriving in town by rail, you won’t need to rent a car or sort out a bus because you’ll be literally steps from everything—including your hotel. The locomotives on display are impressive, no doubt about it, and active kids will appreciate the chance to operate the diesel simulator, and the chance to explore the children’s play area and check out a movie or two.
For a change of scenery, consider making the Holiday Inn Winnipeg South Hotel your home base before an event at MTS Centre. You’re just a 10-minute drive or bus ride from the hotel’s grounds, and if the game is a barn burner you’ll be grateful for the bit of distance between you and downtown.
