Kids and parents alike are enthralled by the magic of the Disney animated films. But for one boy, the movies were so much more than just a favourite pastime.
Owen Suskind was a normal, happy, thriving three-year-old boy until one day, he suddenly went silent. After doctors diagnosed him with autism, his parents were unable to communicate with their son for years.
Just as they were beginning to give up hope of ever hearing Owen talk again, he told his father that he didn’t want to grow up to be like Mowgli or Peter Pan.
Through repeated viewings of classic Disney movies like The Lion King, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, and with his parents playing the roles of all its characters, Owen was finally able to regain speech, re-connect with the world around him and communicate with his family once more.
Taken from his father Ron Suskind’s New York Times bestselling book about his son and directed by Academy Award winner Ross Williams, comes Life, Animated; a beautiful and heart-warming story about facing adversity and finding the light in the darkest of times.
Life, Animated, opens in Toronto on Friday, July 22 exclusively at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema and then select cities in following weeks.
