It’s back to school time and with it comes a return to al the after-class activities, sports, lessons, and more. In other words: here comes the full schedule. But there’s still plenty of Vancouver family fun to be had this month, as summer events trail off and autumn events pick up. So find time in between the official stuff to explore your city, get out into the woods, check out what’s happening in your community, and have some fun with the fam. Here’s a few local events coming up this month, from North Vancouver to Abbotsford, and spots in between.
What’s On for Vancouver Family Fun in September
PNE Fair

For generations, Vancouverites have marked the end of summer with the PNE Fair. This year’s fair runs from August 20 until September 5 (closed on August 29). Events include returning favourites and new hits, including the Stars of the Peking Acrobats, SuperDogs, Flying Fools High Dive Show, BCAA ToonCity shows, Dueling Pianos, Electric Fire, For the Love of Drag tribute show, Coca-Cola Stage bands, and the always popular Summer Night Concerts. Check out the food trucks for unique eats, and learn about BC’s agriculture, along with plenty of other displays and activities. The fair will be operating at a reduced capacity again this year, so get your tickets early.
More Than a Mine at Britannia Mine

This summer, Britannia Mine is hosting a unique exhibition called More Than a Mine: Recreation in a Mining Town. Learn all about the community that sprung up around the mine in its early years, and how the workers and their family spent their free time. The mine was in operation from 1904 to 1974. Local archives and historical records share details about the clubs, sports and social life of the small community. Visitors can explore all the regular exhibits as well to learn to about the mine and its unique history.
Circo Osorio International Circus
When: Sept. 8 to October 17

Spend a night under the big tip enjoying international circus acts throughout the month. This travelling circus will be spending several days in a number of local communities across the greater Vancouver region including Abbotsford, Surrey, Tsawwassen, Richmond, and Coquitlam. This show – which includes acrobats, sword swallowers, and much more – has been running for more than 21 years, and has appeared in more than 800 cities across the globe.
Coho Festival at Ambleside

Hosted by the Coho Society of the North Shore, this annual event is scheduled to return to Ambleside on September 11 with its popular swim and run, along with festival fun including a salmon BBQ, educational events, live entertainment, and much more. Details are still being finalized so check the website closer to the date.
Riverfest in New Westminster

Learn all about the Fraser River, from the animals that live in or near it, to the people who work on it, to the impact of the environment on it, at this annual festival focused on all things river. Taking place over a number of days, and with a mix of in-person and online events, there is sure to be something for every nature lover – or boat lover. EV Festival of Learning

Here’s some Vancouver family fun for the older kids and teens – especially those who might be scientifically and mechanically inclined. Join BCIT for the first-ever electric vehicle (EV) open house. EVolution ’22 is a free event to celebrate electric vehicles, with industry experts and vendors on hand to allow visitors to explore the myths and realities of electric vehicles.
Fire Dragon Festival

This day-long festival features tai chi presentations, dumpling making, workshops, entertainment, and Fire Dragon dance. This festival is part of mid-autumn celebrations
