Moms know that the new year really begins in September. This month is all about fresh starts and new beginnings. Here’s our guide to making the most of this exciting time of year.

DO
Squeeze every last ounce of fun out of summer. Make a plan for a family adventure, whether it be taking a day trip or going for a family walk and scavenger hunt.
Why? September can get crazy, and it always goes by in a flash. Take the time to slow down and enjoy an outing as a family.

GO
To The Victoria International Chalk Art Festival, September 12–13 at The Bay Centre
Why? Because it’s Canada’s largest street painting festival! This free family-friendly celebration of art will feature some of the world’s top street painters as well as those from across B.C and our local region. Stroll about and take in the spectacle on the streets of Victoria.

GET
Yourself a backpack, too
Why?…should the kids have all the fun? Shiny new school gear is exciting! Backpacks for adults are trendy now, so set aside your oversized tote and pick up this chic leather pack—we love the deep, rich burgundy colour. Your shoulders and back will rejoice.

SURF
dkfindout.com
Why? It’s like an encyclopedia—only just for kids and way more fun. It’s all illustrated and organized by topic and subtopic—so kids can easily browse on their own and search for their favourite things—from dinosaurs to trains to the human brain.

WATCH
The Disney Channel
Why? Because all of your kids’ favourite shows, like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Girl Meets World, are now available in Canada all in one place. Watch for the Disney Channel app, too, launching later this month, for access to on-demand episodes.

READ
The ‘Me Me Me’ Epidemic: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World by Amy McCready
Why? Because it can be tough for kids to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around them. Not only do we spend all our waking hours taking them places, our culture celebrates naval-gazing in all its selfie-stick-wielding ways. In this new book, parenting expert Amy McCready outlines how to cultivate healthy attitudes in our kids by setting limits and training them in responsible behaviour. Read it this month and use the return to school to establish some new expectations.

APP
ImmunizeCA
Why? September tends to bring organization to the forefront of our to-do lists—and we’re loving this new app from Immunize Canada. Spend a little time entering the details of your family’s immunization records, and you’ll receive appointment reminders, find out when a vaccine is due, and get alerts of outbreaks near you. So much better than that little yellow card at the back of your junk drawer.

GREEN IT
By shopping eco-friendly and non-toxic diapers, baby products and household cleaners from the Honest Company
Why? Because their products are now available at Indigo and Well.ca. Arrivederci, shipping fees.

HELP
Keep British Columbia beautiful by planting a tree and participating in TD Tree Days on September 27, from 9 am–12 pm at the New Waterford Treatment plant. Not your neck of the woods? Check the full list of locations and schedule of events to find a Tree Day planting session and day nearest you.
Why? You could say they’re our ecological superstars, and everyone can reap the benefits of a greener urban environment. Trees act as carbon reservoirs, but they also protect against soil erosion, provide shade and buffer noise and wind.
