Loco in PoMo

“Lazy days” has a different meaning when you have kids, because ironically, Mom’s sanity depends on keeping everyone busy.
So when you need to mix things up a little, plan a day to explore Port Moody. It’s less than an hour’s drive from most of the Lower Mainland and it’s an outdoor mecca for beaching, barbecuing and biking.

First stop on the tour is Rocky Point Park. Completely redesigned in 2006, Rocky Point has some great, modern facilities, including a waterpark, playground, pool and wading pool. There are lots of green spaces, covered picnic areas, new, clean change rooms, and a beachfront as well. While it may not be the best beach for swimming, when the tide is out it is great for sand exploring. A lesser-known fact is that this park is also part of a wonderful trail system, The Shoreline Trail, connecting all of the six Port Moody beaches and waterfront parks (3 km in length). The southern end of the trail also forms part of the Trans-Canada Trail. Be sure to bring your bikes if you can.

For older kids, rent a kayak, visit the skateboard park, watch the bikers at the trials park, browse Artists in the Park or visit the Port Moody Station Museum, which tells the history of this famous CP Railway town. And when it’s time for a snack or meal, head to the popular Pajo’s Fish and Chips hut in the park (there is a Boathouse within walking distance, too, offering a little more upscale fare).
