Brace yourselves. It’s that time of year again. September means the end of summer (sigh) but it also means a new year and a fresh start. Here’s our guide to this back-to-reality month.

Create a roster of babysitters by getting to know your local teenagers
Why? They aren’t just useful for date night. Younger babysitters can pinch hit when you need to take older siblings to a practice or a playdate, they can help with homework, or watch the baby while you’re getting dinner on the table. A few hours a week can easily lighten the load.

To Treefest on Saturday, September 13 in Coquitlam
Why? Because this free family event is a great opportunity to teach the kids more about British Columbia’s natural environment. Visit the tents in the Industrial Services parking lot for crafts and activities, and be sure to catch the children’s guided tree walk at 12:30 pm.

Sleep schedules back on track before school starts
Why? Because it will make for an easier transition, and fewer tears (yours or theirs) when the alarm goes off Tuesday morning.

Good old-fashioned hopscotch

Clean up the Fraser River at RiverFest on September 21
Why? The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is the kick-off to RiverFest. After you and the kids do your part to keep the shoreline clean, reward yourselves by checking out the free family-friendly art exhibits, interactive activities, crafts, live music and performances, river tours, the famous Lucille Johnstone Work Boat Parade and the annual Salmon Chowder Cook-Off.
