Day Trippin’ around Vancouver

They say that nothing is certain except death and taxes. But there’s one more certainty that’s almost as gloomy—the fact that summer will be over before we know it. We say go forth and explore all that Vancouver and her surrounding waters have to offer. These four picks for a perfect day trip with kids will help you to max out your summer fun.

Bowen Island
Bowen Island is only a twenty minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay (and a beautiful ferry ride at that), yet it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Park your car in Horseshoe Bay and walk onto the ferry. Once the ferry docks in Snug Cove, shops and restaurants are at your toes, and Crippen Park has a variety of hikes for legs of all lengths, the easiest being the Bridal Veil Falls hike (about ten minutes, and if you’re lucky you will see fish in the fish ladder).

Cultus Lake Waterpark
Kids won’t mind getting out of bed for this day trip. It’s a 90 minute drive from Vancouver, but with attractions like Pirate’s Cove and the Adventure River for small swimmers, there is something for everyone at this waterpark. Pack a picnic, bring a Frisbee, and don’t forget to plug your nose if you brave the Freefall.

White Pine Beach, Sasamat Lake
Go early—this is the warmest lake in the Lower Mainland, and it gets extremely busy on sunny days. It’s worth it for the white sandy beach, the surrounding hiking trails and the trout fishing. Good to know: the parking lot can fill up, so park and ride the bus from Coquitlam Station.

Canoeing in Deep Cove
Because paddling in Indian Arm is good for the soul, head to Deep Cove in North Vancouver to rent a canoe, kayak or try a SUP—that’s a stand up paddleboard. You won’t be the only one with this genius idea, so call ahead to reserve the vessel of your choice. Afterwards, reward yourself with the best doughnut you will ever eat at Honey’s Doughnuts. Your children will thank you, even if your waistline won’t.

Dive in—we are waterlogged with ways to enjoy this summer with your family.
