Two Surprising Ways to Soothe a Teething Baby

Santa was sweet enough to bring my cherubic ten-month-old not one, two, or three, but FIVE new teeth one Christmas. In a season that’s already packed full of late nights, holiday busyness, and a touch of chaos, we also added a teething baby and a sleep deprived mother to the mix. Yikes.

On the days that were really bad, I broke out the bottles of liquid pain relief, but on others I turned to the kitchen and pantry to source natural, edible teethers in hopes of offering some tasty comfort.

Surprisingly, the most popular thing I gave him was dried mango slices. Three to four inches in length, the dried fruit can be sucked and gnawed on endlessly without breaking down, meaning my babe could work on one piece of fruit for 20-30 minutes (or until he got bored) without it disintegrating or disappearing into his belly! Usually during the holidays, cookies and cocktail supplies are at the top of my grocery list, but this year, it was dried mangoes that made it to the top of my list.

The second more savoury way I soothed his sore gums was with Parmesan cheese rinds. It sounds weird, I know, but it does work. I keep my leftover rinds in the freezer for tossing into soups, stews, and sauces, and the chilled cheese was perfect for my little guy to chomp on while I was busy in the kitchen. Again, his existing teeth weren’t able to break off pieces so he gummed the rind until he was no longer interested in doing so.

I wanted to share my discoveries in case one of you savvy readers also has a teething child to contend with these days. Do you have any secret ways of soothing a teething baby? Feel free to share in the comments, we love hearing from you!
