With March Break nearly over, it’s hard to ignore that summer camp registration time is here. Worried you missed the boat? Don’t panic.
While it’s true that some programs will already be booked solid, never fear; there are so many options, you’re sure to find something to suit your schedule and your child’s interests.
First off, pick a camp based on your child’s likes and activities. While some parents prefer an all-round program like those offered at Ryerson, U of T and the YMCA, don’t ignore the specialty camps. With programs ranging from trapeze and juggling at the Circus Academy’s circus camps, cooking up some culinary skills with The Chef Upstairs, inspiring the budding entomologist with Bugs Without Borders, eco-exploring with Green City Adventure Camps, hamming it up with improv skills at Second City or exploring imagination and technology with TIFF Kids, there’s something to spark every child’s curiosity.
For working parents relying on day camps for childcare, remember to ask about extended hours. Early drop-offs and late pick-ups can be a lifesaver, especially with summer construction traffic in the city.
If there is a program you wanted and think may already be full, pick up the phone and call the organizers. We’re so used to technology and often think emailing is easier, but you’ll frequently find you get better results actually speaking to someone. They’ll have all the booking information and know the realities of what is and isn’t available, plus there may be cancellations or other booking options. It’s definitely worth your time to dial and ask.
Also don’t forget our libraries and community centres. Though sometimes overlooked, they have a diverse array of free and affordable programming options.
So don’t stress—just book it and breathe easy!
