On the Hunt

On a hunt for unique activities this Easter weekend? We checked around our urban jungle and uncovered fun for everyone in your brood.

Celebrate spring in High Park—and sweating for a good cause—by cheering on participants, including kids, ages 5 to 13 (who run an 800 metre race), at the annual Harry’s Spring Run Off in support of prostate cancer. After time spent in one of the cities’ best outdoor spaces, consider making a donation to rebuild the Jamie Bell playground, recently destroyed by arson.

You don’t know Jack—though his story may sound familiar. YPT’s production of Jack and the Giant Beanstalk is a modern take on the classic story. It’s a wonderful retelling that remains true to key parts of the original English folktale, but with modern dilemmas explored, such as environmental concerns. Worth going to just for the amazing set, the audience surrounds a giant sandbox beneath the sky. Recommended for kids JK to grade three.

Japanese creativity extends way beyond the Bakugans cluttering up your playroom. Studio Ghibli—think Japan’s Pixar or Disney studios—is being celebrated at TIFF. Known for their beautifully drawn, designed and intelligent works such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Kiki’s Delivery Service and more, kids five and up (depending on the film) will love these dubbed and subtitled films starring young heroes and heroines. Celebrating the best of Japanese animation, the films feature themes that translate to adolescents in any area of the world.

Sweet on attending a traditional Easter-themed event? Lindt chocolate is the official chocolate of Sunday’s annual Easter Beach Parade. Plan for an early arrival to guarantee good sidewalk seats and parking (or take the TTC).

The weekend will be here before you know it. Better get cracking on your plans now, or you could be toast.
