You may be tempted to hibernate under a duvet in front of the TV for the rest of this winter, but chances are your kids’ energy levels won’t allow it. So we’ve compiled this list of fun things to do in Toronto this winter with kids, so there’s no excuse not to get out there and make the best of the season.
Better yet, relish in it! Toronto has some great places to skate, sled, ski, and play in the snow. Once everyone is all bundled up properly, spending time outdoors in winter can be a lot of fun. Bonus: afterwards, you’ve never deserved the hot cocoa more!
Here’s our master list of cold-weather activities to keep the kiddos busy this winter in Toronto.
5 Things to Do in Toronto This Winter with Kids
Go tobogganing.
It’s a no-brainer on a snowy day. Head out early when the sun is shining and finish up with hot cocoa, of course! The city runs has officially “sanctioned” nearly two dozen tobogganing hills in local parks. Below we round up some of our favourite spots that we think you and your family could check out. See our list of the best toboggan hills in Toronto.
Go Skating.
We round up 11 of our favourite, family-friendly outdoor ice pads, as well as one bonus icy activity. Most of these rinks are operated by the City of Toronto, which means that access is free and there are (usually) changerooms, bathrooms, and skating aids available. As always, all City-run rinks require that that kids under six wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet. During current COVID times, City-run rinks require that a mask must be worn around the ice, including when lacing up and interacting with staff, but no face coverings are needed when you’re on the ice.
Go Hiking
Feeling a little stir-crazy? Worried that the kids (and maybe you) are spending too much time in front of screens? Then get everyone bundled up and head out for a refreshing walk in nature. We round up 11 trails and areas that are perfect for relaxed Toronto winter hikes with kids. The bulk of these trails are right here in Toronto, but we have included a few outside-the-city options, for those families that are up for a little more time in the car.
Strap on some skis.
You don’t have to trek up to Blue Mountain to go downhill skiing or snowboarding. There are smaller hills close to Toronto, including at Earl Bales Park in North York. They may not be mighty, but they’re mighty fun for little learners. Cross-country skiing is a fun way to spend some time in winter, too. Find local cross-country ski trails that offer rentals.
Run Away
Winter 2021/22 is shaping up to be a great one for Ontario winter getaways for families. Many local Ontario resorts and attractions are back to almost business-as-usual and quite a few are offering discounts to get you through their doors. As well, last year the provincial government announced the launch of the Staycation Ontario Tax Credit program. Valid only for 2022, this effort to get Ontarians spending the night at eligible accommodations could put up to $400 back in your pocket, come the 2023 tax season. Check out these 10 Southern Ontario getaway ideas for families.
