Making a Tony Hawk skateboard reference doesn’t show our age too much does it?
Even if our kids don’t know who we are talking about, it’s clear that we are seeing skateboarding (and the use of skateboard parks) continue to be popular as a new generation learns how to have fun with skateboards. As our kids grow older and move on from traditional play parks around Ottawa, they may be joining up with their friends to try out some new moves at one of our local skateboard parks.
Now sure where to go to help your child test out their equipment? Here are some skateparks in Ottawa and the surrounding areas, as well as places where you can register your kids for lessons or skateboard camp. Share your favourites in the comments!
Skateparks in Ottawa
Indoor Skating & Biking Year ‘Round at The Yard
Don’t let the weather dampen your child’s ability to play. Instead, take them to The Yard at City Centre Avenue where they can enjoy the indoor facilities year ’round. (It’s opening up during Step 3 of our reopening plans in Ontario as of July 16). There are skateboard lessons and camps for kids aged 8 to 14. If your child isn’t quite into skateboarding, maybe they want to visit The Yard to learn some moves for their scooter.
City Run Skateparks in Ottawa
There are many city run skateparks in Ottawa (and scooter parks, and BMX parks) so no matter where you are in the city, you’ll likely find one nearby. You’ll find the full list on the City of Ottawa website which will give you some tips about the size of the park, where they are located, and descriptions about the park itself.
For example, one of the newer spots in the city is located at Lansdowne, near the play park and water feature. Or, check out the spacious skate park at Ben Franklin Place and the Legacy Skatepark with over 17,000 square feet of space. There’s also Charlie Bowins Skateboard Park at McNabb Park, with over 10 components (including a large half pipe).
In Ottawa’s East End, visit Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex and their SK8 Extreme Park. These are just to name a few. Many of the Ottawa run locations also offer camp experiences. You can find more details and information about registering for camps on the City website, and the complete list of skatepark locations (all 15) on the website as well.
Top of the World
When things are fully open again, there’s a chance you’ll be able to rent the three-foot high ramp at Top of the World skate shop for your kids to practice on (the ramp is currently closed, but watch their website for updates). Helmets are mandatory for those under 16 years of age and rentals are only $5 for a 2-hour time window. After skating, browse their shop for apparel, board gear, and more. The shop offers curbside pick up right now too!
On Deck Skateboard Shop
Located in Nepean, the On Deck Skateboard Shop not only carries everything you need to purchase your skateboard, but also offers lessons for all ages and skill levels. Maybe this is where mom and dad can learn a new skill and skateboarding can become a family activity?
For your kids, On Deck has camps for students ages 5 to 16 during the summer, school holidays, and PD Days. A skateboard, helmet, and pads are required for campers. There are camp weeks for this summer but each week has limited availability. Register online for camp or private lessons.
