Our families all like to stay active in a variety of ways, but in addition to participating in sports this summer, many of us are also thrilled at the prospect of being spectators. We put on our team jersey and head into the crowd to cheer on our local sporting team, or Canadian athletes who are in town at special events. And while it may no longer be hockey season, even if the kids are still playing in tournaments, there are plenty of ways to watch family-friendly sporting events all summer long.
Go to a RedBlacks Game
After hosting last year’s Grey Cup game, Ottawa fans are feeling the football fever and the Ottawa RedBlacks football team is playing at home games throughout the summer and while most games are in the evening, the July 28th game is at 4 pm so it’s a convenient family game time. You can even grab a bite to eat thanks to the yummy food stations and restaurants throughout TD Place and Lansdowne.
Kick it at a Soccer Game
With all of the World Cup excitement currently happening, soccer interest has been kicked up a notch in the city making it a great time to grab tickets and head to an Ottawa Fury match at TD Place at Lansdowne. Games are played during the afternoons and evenings, and cost between $7 and $28. There is transportation available with OC Transpo to TD Place which may be helpful when the parking lot is getting full.
Reach for Tickets to the FIBA Basketball Tournament
On July 2, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers are in town at TD Place as Canada takes on the US Virgin Islands at 1:30 pm. NBA players are eligible to play this summer. You can buy tickets to the qualifying game and watch Canada’s potential future Olympic team.
Be in Awe at Cirque de Soleil
Acrobatics will be on full display at Corteo, Cirque de Soleil performance in Ottawa from June 27 until July 1. For the first time in our City, Corteo will offer performances at the Canadian Tire Centre. This fantastical performance highlights the imaginary life of a clown. Family packages are available for this stunning artistry that will have your family talking about it for a long time.
Attend the Canadian Track and Field Championships
Many school aged kids will be familiar with their own track and field tournaments and try outs at school which is why we think watching the Canadian Track and Field Championships between July 3 and July 8 at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility on Riverside Drive will be of interest to them. Tickets for kids 12 and under are free and adult tickets are $20 for each day. Olympic and Paraolympic heroes your kids may recognize including Andre De Grasse, Brent Lakatos, Alysha Newman, and Brittany Crew will be attending the championships. Visit the website to find out when your favourite event is taking place and purchase your tickets.
Support CHEO at the Hope Volleyball SummerFest
This well-loved, annual charitable event raises money for community-based organizations across the city. On July 14, come cheer on the volleyball teams and participate in a variety of family-friendly activities and listen to live music. Children aged 9 and under receive their entry tickets for free.
Cheer on the Ottawa Champions
Throughout the summer, the Ottawa Champions baseball team will be at home for many games, including weekends and weekdays. Watching a baseball game is an affordable family activity, plus the ballpark is filled with hands-on fun for the kids to enjoy. Keep an eye out for their special event games where themes and extra activities are available, and hot dog nights on select Thursdays where the hot dogs only cost $1!
