Saskatoon Farm: A Family-Favourite Outing for Summer

Saskatoon Farm_feature

Based on its name, many would expect the Saskatoon Farm to just be a basic farm, or possibly a U-pick. While it is both of those things, what you might not know is that there are plenty of fun features that make this spot perfect for a family visit!

The Saskatoon Farm is only a short 20-minute drive from Calgary but it has a wonderful country feel.  We love their easy-to-access yet off-the-beaten-path location.

Entering the farm, you’re greeted by the garden centre, beautiful green houses, bakery, restaurant, and general store.   You might even get a ‘welcome’ from one of the resident farm cats or dogs – our kids always look to find them if they don’t find us.

We enjoy taking a slow stroll through the greenhouses, and garden centre, to see the extensive selection of flower baskets, trees, and shrubs. When you visit, make sure to search out the farm animals that call one of the greenhouses their home.  Kids always delight in unexpectedly finding the pigs, roosters, and turkeys.

In the summer time, beginning in early July, the garden centre hosts a Farm Market where you can purchase freshly picked and organically grown vegetables.

If you would prefer, you can also experience picking fresh fruit yourself at the farm’s U-pick orchard that sits along the banks of the beautiful Highwood River.  There are several options available that can suit all ages of children:

  • Grazing (which is only $2 per person and perfect for the ‘littles’)
  • U-pick by the bucket
  • Pre-picked fruit by the bucket

The U-pick season usually begins around mid-July and runs until the middle to end of August, depending on weather. It’s best to inquire based on when you want to visit during the season.

While you’re there, check out the General Store where you’ll find an eclectic selection of home décor and gift-type items along with the on-site bakery, which is filled with food items including delicious baked goods, homemade soups, local meats, and other goodies.

If you get hungry during your visit, be sure to visit the restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch, and is a very kid-friendly establishment.  The café has a kids’ menu, high chairs, and we love the fact that they serve drinks to toddlers in sippy cups!  If you visit on a fair-weather day, we recommend trying to get a spot on the beautiful, yet shaded, patio!  Tip: the Farmers Biscuit is rich, delicious, and to die for.

When you’re done, don’t forget to grab an ice-cream cone and take an easy stroll over to Saskatoon Farm viewpoint.  It’s a scenic spot, over looking where the Highwood River and Sheep River join.  It’s a nice way to wrap up your time spent away in the country!
