After a uniquely long, hot summer, the recent cooler weather – and yes, even all the rain – is a welcome change. And it doesn’t mean an end to the outdoor fun, especially as the region’s favourite autumn activities kick into high gear. With Halloween right around the corner, the local pumpkin patches in Vancouver are in full swing (and the apple picking is still in progress too, depending on the varieties).
So pull out the rain boots, zip up the rain jackets, and head out for some festive fun at a local family-friendly farm.
Our favourite pumpkin patches in Vancouver and the surrounding areas:
Maan Farms
There’s as much for the parents as the kids at Maan Farms’ fall lineup. The little ones will get a kick out of the pumpkin patch, corn maze, playground, and more, while the grown-ups can indulge in some gourmet treats including fresh mini donuts and pumpkin cream topped with a ginger cookie (and wine tasting, too). They also have an evening “haunting” event that runs after 7, best suited for adults and teens.
Aldor Acres Family Farm
The folks at Aldor Acres know a thing or two about families: the farm is a three-generation family affair, which is still family-owned and operated. The picturesque 80-acre farm is situated a few kilometres east of Fort Langley and is a working farm that is busy all year round but their popular pumpkin patch is perhaps their most well known venture.
With more than 20 acres of pumpkin fields, there’s bound to be the picture-perfect pumpkin for every visitor. They are open now until October 31, daily.
Taves Family Farms
Families come from all over the region to visit this Fraser Valley farm in Abbotsford where Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Gala apples are just a few of the varieties waiting to be picked. But the Taves Family Farm also features a pumpkin patch which runs all month through October, with zip lines, play areas, a petting barn, and much more.
While you’re there, check out the ever popular Apple Barn Country Store, which sells homemade pies, preservers, fresh cider and more. The farm offers unique attractions throughout the year, so check their website in every season for upcoming events.
Willow View Farms
This family run farm has been in operation since 1960, and they have been opening their doors to the public for u-pick fun for nearly 30 years. With farm fresh produce, apples, pumpkin patch and more, this Abbotsford area farm is a low-key and cozy choice for a day of farm fun. A little known fact: their pumpkin patch includes more than 50 varieties of pumpkins, including some giant ones that can grow up to 100 pounds. They have a concession and petting zoo, too.
Chilliwack Corn Maze & Pumpkin Farm
Located in Chilliwack, this farm has a unique tradition: each year, the corn maze is designed with an all-new pattern. And the 2020 design highlights the world together: “TOGETHER we can spread love and not hate, together we can make a difference, together there is hope, community, compassion and love.” But the 12-acre corn maze is just one part of the fun; there’s also a giant jumping pillow, a pumpkin patch, a corn train, farm animals and u-pick apples.
Through September and October, the Chilliwack Corn Maze and Pumpkin Farm is open every day (but with varying times depending on the day of the week so check out the schedule online before visiting.)
Richmond Country Farms
One of the view pumpkin patches on the west end of the region, this farm’s annual pumpkin patch is one of the most popular around. With options for both walking to the patch (the Pumpkin Promenade), or taking a hay ride (the Wagon Experience), visitors get the chance to choose their own pumpkin, then enjoy some food vendors on site. Live entertainment won’t be happening this year, and organizers encourage purchasing tickets in advance (pricing varies depending on choice of promenade or wagon.)
With these fun pumpkin patches in Vancouver and the surrounding areas, and so many local options for fall fun, now’s the time to plan some adventures and enjoy the crisp weather and cooler days ahead.
