If you’ve ever been to a party at my house then you know that pretzel party sticks are pretty much the most popular treat I make, regardless of the occasion. There are 10 kids in our extended family, and every one of them bolts for the salty-sweet confections as soon as they walk in the door.
I like them because, not only are they a no-bake treat that couldn’t be easier to make, but they can also be customized to suit any theme or occasion with a quick switch of the coloured dipping chocolate or decorative sprinkles.
In fact, I’ve made pretzel party sticks for a few of the parties I’ve hosted. Last fall, I made pretzel crayons instead of pencil crayons for an art party, and on my own site, I made monster-inspired snack sticks as a Halloween treat for my son’s class, as well as a jar of coloured confections for my son’s birthday last spring.
I’m partial to using the long rods, which I pick up at my local cake-decorating store, but you can also purchase them at some specialty grocery and bulk food stores, too. However, if the long rods are not available, you can treat ordinary pretzels with the same dip-and-sprinkle application I use, and serve them in a large bowl once dry.
A bit about making these treats: I find it easiest to melt the chocolate on the stove using the double-broiled method. Place a heat-proof bowl over a pot of simmering water and leave the chocolate alone until it’s mostly melted, at which point you can begin stirring it with a rubber spatula until thick and glossy. I’m partial to candy melts (the chocolate discs) which melt more evenly than chips for some weird reason.
I think every party host should have a signature dish or two up her sleeve, the ones that people look forward to and request often, and these are definitely mine when it comes to hosting kids.
