Chelsea, Quebec

Head over the bridge to Quebec and visit Chelsea! This quaint village is well known for its ski hills, cross country ski trails, hiking trails, excellent coffee shops, and yummy food. It’s a no brainer on our list of family winter getaways from Ottawa.

Our ideal Saturday itinerary? Head to Les Saisons for a morning coffee and hot chocolate for the kids then visit Camp Fortune for a day of skiing (book some private lessons for the kids!) and fun on the hills. Feeling hungry? You won’t want to miss out on Paco Croissanterie fresh baked goods….they are legendary! Back to the village for dinner gives you the options of Le Bronx Pizza (New York style), Chelsea Shawarma & Pizza (so many great and quick options!) or head to Maman Theresa or Manchester Bistro for a sit down experience.

Why not bring your skates with you as well and enjoy some public skating at the Centre Meredith.

Montebello, Quebec

Parc Omega is a fun way to spend some time outdoors and get up close and personal with some of Canada’s favourite animals in a natural environment. Parc Omega offers a drive through experience where you can feed many of the animals (make sure you follow the signs and rules!) as they come right up to your vehicle. Park your car and head for a special walk to see the wolves and then head up to the farm where you can grab a hot chocolate and enjoy some time in the snow as you feed the deer right out of your hand.

If you are looking for an overnight option you can stay in one of the special private lodging options that Parc Omega offers including sleeping with the wolves! Looking for a different kind of stay? Fairmont Chateau Montebello is a special gem of a resort that is extremely welcoming to families and will invite you to experience the outdoors, great food, special attractions and outings, an amazing pool experience (the indoor pool is gorgeous!) and historic rooms.

Mont Tremblant, Quebec

In less than about three hours from Ottawa, your family can be in Mont Tremblant ready to hit the slopes or browse the pedestrian village. Mont Tremblant offers spectacular hillside views where skiers of all skill levels can enjoy fresh powder, or where families can dine and explore. Take the panoramic gondola ride up the mountain for breathtaking scenery, go tubing for some adventure, or shop the village. Accommodations around Mont Tremblant include ski-up condo rentals, and plenty of local hotels to visit like Le Westin Resort and Spa Tremblant. We love that the Westin has family suites with kitchenettes available.

Kingston, ON

Often overlooked Kingston is a great family friendly city that is a quick escape for a day trip or weekend.  If hockey season is here then check out a Kingston Frontenacs game, enjoy outdoor ice skating at Market Square and check out Woodenheads for a delicious pizza experience. Want to stay overnight?

The Delta Kingston is right on the water with spacious bright rooms and many places walkable right from the front door.

Brockville, ON

Brockville can be a day trip on it’s own or a stop in on your way to Kingston. Head to the Aquatarium  for a fun indoor experience with the kids that includes exploring fish and aquatic life from the St. Lawrence River and other eco-systems. You won’t want to miss the 2 river otters as they swim, play and move in their large enclosed river habitat. If reptiles and amphibians are on your “must see” list then you can check that off your list here as well. Turtles, frogs, and snakes….oh my! You will find lots of hand on stations throughout that are great for the younger crowd and will allow their creativity to soar and also have lots of teachable moments.

Montreal, QC

Yes, it is possible to do a day trip to Montreal, my family has done it many times! Head out early in the day, arrive at your attraction destination for opening, spend the day exploring and then head back home. However, Montreal is such a wonderful adventurous city that you could easily spend a weekend here! Some of our favourite places to visit are:

  • Montreal Science Centre (+ you can use the reciprocal agreement if you have a membership from the Ottawa Science Centre!)
  • Biodome – this place is absolutely amazing and will be enjoyed by your whole family! Explore various eco systems including the St. Lawrence River, Tropical Rainforest, Labrador Coast & Sub-Antartic Islands and the Laurentian Maple Forest. You will see penguins, capybara, puffins, flamingos, lynx, otters and over 800 plant species.
  • Insectarium– across the street from the Biodome visit the Insectarium and discover over 3000 plants and more insects than you ever thought possible in one space!
  • Old Port Ice Skating Rink– enjoy some family time skating in one of the most magical places in Canada. Enjoy a hot chocolate after at one if the many great cafes.

Vaudreuil-Dorion

Just before you get to Montreal is Vaudreuil-Dorion where you’ll find Chateau Vaudrauil, conveniently located off of the highway, and set on a lake with beautiful views. Your family can get cozy for a weekend here (the hotel offers suites) and explore the area (or drive into Montreal, it’s only about 20 minutes away), visit the Zoo Ecomuseum dedicated to the wellbeing of endangered animals and check out the local shopping.

However, don’t feel you have to be on the go all the time. Chateau Vaudrauil offers a scenic and relaxing opportunity to get away from it all. Dine in their amazing restaurant, swim in the indoor pool, and walk the snowy grounds with views of the frozen lake.

Toronto, ON

If you are ready for a quick weekend getaway and want to stay in Canada than head to Toronto. This city is vibrant and always has fun and new things to experience with kids of all ages! Destination Toronto will keep you in the know of all the fun and happening events throughout the 416. Take a drive to Toronto or kickback and enjoy the trip with Via Rail. The train station will take you right downtown and with Toronto’s underground system you can easily get around to everywhere you need to go. But don’t be intimidated by driving in this big city! There are tons of parking options throughout the downtown core and as long as you miss rush hour you can zip right through to where you want to go.

Book a stay at the Chelsea Hotel where you will find a kids activity room, family friendly rooms and a great pool with an indoor corkscrew waterslide with restaurants and shopping all within a block or two! We also love the ease of walking out of Union Station to the Fairmont Royal York or head down closer to the water and enjoy the Delta where you will be right next door to the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, Scotiabank Arena, and the Rogers Centre.

  • Book a time at Ripley’s Aquarium (best time to go is right for when doors open!) and enjoy exploring the underwater world!
  • Head up to the top of the CN Tower and experience the glass floor while getting some of the best views of the City!
  • The Ontario Science Centre is a day of fun for kids of all ages as they explore and get hands on with science! PLUS if you hold an Ingenium museum pass from the Ottawa Science Centre then you can access this museum for free! The KidSpark areas is always one of my family faves.
  • Legoland in Vaughan will keep your little ones busy if they love to be hands on, building and creating. Legoland is within the Vaughan Mills Mall so you can also tack on some shopping or hit up one of the local restaurants.
  • Need a yummy and quick bite to eat that everybody will love? Pizza Libretto is always a family hit. Looking for vegetarian options? Fresh has the best nachos around!
  • City Sightseeing Toronto is a great way to get to know the city and gives you the ability to hop on and off as you would like.
  • Dinosaur, Birds, Mammals and Art….Oh My! The Royal Ontario Museum is another must experience museum while you are in the city with your family, especially if your kids are a bit older.

Syracuse, NY

Have a passport and ready to cross the border? Syracuse is another quick getaway options (only 3 hours from Ottawa!) and is a fun weekend getaway that may not be in your usual repertoire! Stay at the Embassy Suites by Hilton at Destiny USA  and you can walk right into the Destiny Mall where you will find hours and hours of fun for the full family. From glow in the dark mini putt, bowling, go-karting, Canyon Climb adventure ropes course, laser tag, Dave & Busters and so much more! Don’t miss out on a dinner at Dinosaur BBQ, Funk n Waffles has great evening entertainment but with the family you will want to check out their breakfast options! Don’t forget to stop in at Glazed & Confused for some delicious donuts!

While there are a lot of great things to explore and experience in Ottawa it’s always fun to head out for a day or quick weekend getaway and explore a different area with your family.  Have fun exploring and trying out some new fun places!

Bayview Wildwood Ontario Winter Getaways for Families-SavvyMom

Southern Ontario Winter Getaways for Families

Ontario winter getaways for families? C’mon… Let’s be honest: Winter in Toronto can be a bit brutal, especially after the lights and the excitement of the holidays have faded away. And while a trip to somewhere warmer and beach-ier is likely on many people’s minds, we realize that it won’t be possible for many of us. Have you seen the prices of flights lately!

Thankfully, even in winter, there are plenty of nearby destinations where you can get a quick break from the city and reconnect with your family and with nature. Just be sure to bundle up! Below, we round up 10 family-friendly resorts and other destinations that are perfect for your Ontario winter getaway. In addition to showcasing places where your family can hit the slopes, we’ve tried to also include spots that have a range of activities, from skating to indoor playgrounds to even water parks. And we’ve made sure to answer the question we know your kids will have, “Is there a pool?”

10 Southern Ontario Winter Getaways for Families

Bayview Wildwood Resort
Severn Bridge, ON

Distance from Toronto: Nearly two hours
Is there a pool: Yes

This Muskoka-area resort may not offer downhill skiing, but it does feature tons of other outdoor activities including skating, tobogganing and even ice fishing. But don’t worry about having to pack your skates, sled, or bait; Bayview supplies all the equipment you need, at no extra charge. Also included in your resort fee is access to several family-friendly indoor activities, such as an indoor playground. Bayview offers several accommodation options, including cottages, and has an “all-inclusive” meal package that features access to a delicious buffet breakfast and dinner each night. The resort also offered special packages and extra activities, like live entertainment, over certain time periods, like the Family Day long weekend.

Blue Mountain Resort
The Blue Mountains, ON

Distance from Toronto: Just over two hours
Is there a pool: Plunge! Aquatic Centre is available for an additional fee.

Featuring 365 skiable acres and three terrain parks, Blue Mountain is one of the most popular ski and snowboard resorts in Ontario. It’s also a great place to learn how to master the slopes, due to its well-established ski school, which includes lessons for kids. Not into skiing? Blue Mountain has you covered with tubing, fat biking, and its ever-popular Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster. And let’s not forget the fireworks over the pond every Saturday night.

The resort, located just outside Collingwood, is also rich in accommodation options. The Blue Mountain Village offers nine different “lodges,” and the surrounding area is full of condo-style rentals. Also in abundance are a wide variety of dining options, meaning even the pickiest eater in your family will be satisfied. If you’re looking for a Christmas getaway, book your stay during Blue Mountain’s Holiday Magic festival, on now until January 8. This event features beautiful lights and décor, live music and street performers, and even a roaming Santa Claus.

Deerhurst Resort
Huntsville

Distance from Toronto: Approximately two-and-a-half hours
Is there a pool: Yes

Whatever the weather, your family is sure to make memories at this popular Muskoka resort. Its lengthy list of outdoor activities includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter disc golf. New this year is an outdoor skating rink, fully lit up and conveniently located outside the resort’s pub. Resort guests also have free access to Huntville’s new Eclipse Walk with Light, a forest walk that features thousands of lights and interactive sound installations.

Deerhurst is also a quick drive away from Arrowhead Park and its famous skating trail and is located next to Hidden Valley Highlands ski hill, where your family can enjoy 12 runs and a terrain park. Indoors, Deerhurst offers an indoor playground, a climbing wall, and an arcade. Several on-site dining options are available, and accommodations range from classic hotel rooms to three-bedroom suites.

Fallsview Indoor Waterpark
Niagara Falls, ON

Fallsview Indoor Waterpark is, “125,000 square feet of action-packed water fun” that includes a wave pool, a giant tipping bucket, and slides suitable for all ages. There’s also the Jungle Beach dry playground, for when your kids need a break from the water. Passes start at $38.99 and are available to all members of the public. This means that while you can stay at one of the four hotels connected to the waterpark, your family also has the option to stay anywhere in Niagara Falls.

Fern Resort
Ramara, ON

Distance from Toronto: Nearly two hours
Is there a pool: Yes

All-inclusive resorts aren’t just found down south; Fern Resort takes the popular all-inclusive model and brings it to cottage country. Stay here and your resort fee covers three tasty meals a day (yes, gluten-free, and vegan options are available), and non-alcoholic beverages (alcoholic beverages can be purchased for an additional fee). When you’re not eating, take a skate along the 1.5km skating trail, try your luck at curling or ice fishing, or have some fun in the games room, all activities that are also covered by your fee (and yes, that means that all needed equipment is also covered).

This place is so popular that it’s already booked up over the 2022 Christmas break but there is availability post-New Year’s Day.

Great Wolf Lodge
Niagara Falls, ON

Distance from Toronto: Not quite two hours
Is there a pool: Yes

Let’s be honest: Great Wolf Lodge is probably the only resort on this list that your child could name. It’s well-established even among the kindergarten set and for good reason: It pretty much has everything a kid could want. There’s a lazy river, a four-story interactive treehouse, slides suitable for all ages and confidence levels, and so much more! Great Wolf also offers plenty of fun on dry land, including laser tag, arcade games, and a special, magical quest.

New this year is a virtual reality game. Four accommodation options, including themed suites, and the newish cottages, are available and meals can be purchased à la carte or as part of a package. Alternatively, you can always order in or head into Niagara Falls and select from its wide range of restaurants.

Hockley Valley
Mono, ON

Distance from Toronto: Approximately 90 minutes
Is there a pool: No

Looking for a scenic getaway where your family’s focus can be on perfecting their form on the slopes? Then Hockley Valley may be the right spot. Aiming to open its slopes as soon as the weather will let it, Hockley Valley features 16 ski and snowboarding runs suitable for a variety of skills. It also features an 8,000 square foot spa; send the kids to ski school and then indulge in a facial or a couples’ massage. Also worthy of indulging in is Cabin, Hockley Valley’s well-regarded gourmet restaurant. But if prawn risotto or Ontario venison loin isn’t to your kids’ taste, you can always order in delivery from nearby Mono.

Horseshoe Valley
Barrie, ON

Distance from Toronto: Approximately 90 minutes
Is there a pool: Yes

Exciting news for fans of this nearby resort: Horseshoe Valley has recently undergone some improvements resulting in more night skiing and more snow, meaning your family can spend more time enjoying the resort’s 29 downhill ski and snowboard runs. Of course, skiing isn’t the only activity you can enjoy at Horseshoe. Whip down Ontario’s longest snow tubing hill, or
check out the trails on a guided snowmobile or fat bike tour. Looking for something a little more mellow? Visit Horseshoe’s on-site outdoor skating rink or cross-country ski or snowshoe through the 30km of groomed trails.

Horseshoe also offers several dining options as well as three lodging choices, including condo-style rentals.

Nottawasaga Inn Resort & Conference Centre
Alliston, ON

Distance from Toronto: Just over an hour
Is there a pool: Yes

While the adults in your family will rave about Nottawasaga’s fantastic food, your kids will flip for its tropical-themed pool area, which includes a three-storey, 100m long waterslide. Once they’ve had their fill of pool time, pay a visit to the indoor miniature golf course, then the arcade and games room. Nottawasaga also features an extensive fitness area that includes squash and racquetball courts. While Nottawasaga is light on outdoor activities (though it does offer walking trails), it’s a short drive away from Earl Rowe Provincial Park where your family can cross country ski and snowshoe. Nottawasaga offers a variety of different room types, including suites with in-room Jacuzzis.

Ski Snow Valley
Barrie, ON

Distance from Toronto: Approximately 90 minutes
Is there a pool: No but several local hotels do offer pools

Like the other ski resorts on this list, this one is eagerly awaiting enough consistent, cold weather to open its slopes. But once they are open, your family will enjoy one of the most kid-friendly ski resorts around. In addition to nine beginner runs and kid-focused lessons, Ski Snow Valley offers on-site childcare for kids aged six months to five years. Besides skiing and snowboarding, the resort also offers snowtubing and snowshoeing.

Unlike most of the other spots on this list, you can’t spend the night at Ski Snow Valley, but its Barrie location makes it totally doable as a daytrip. However, if your family wants to spend the night, the city offers a number of popular hotel chairs, including a Hampton Inn & Suites and a Holiday Inn Express, both of which have pools.

There are many amazing Ontario minibreak options that are wonderful at any time of year, but Ontario winter getaways for families are really extra special.

Quickie Winter Getaways near Vancouver - SavvyMom

Best Quickie Winter Getaways near Vancouver

We’re still in the midst of the fun-filled holiday season but as parents, we’re always planning ahead. Between now and spring, there’s a lot of winter to get through yet and our thoughts are turning to how to fill the cold days. A tropical vacation sounds nice but it’s not always feasible, for the budget or the schedule. Luckily, Vancouverites have a host of options for close-to-home getaways that are family friendly (not to mention beautiful enough to draw tourists from around the globe) – so hop in your car (or on a ferry) and head out to see some of the local beauty in our own corner of BC.

Here’s a few of our favourite winter getaways near Vancouver:

Manning Park

Escape into a winter wonderland just a few hours from Vancouver. Manning Park has it all – a lodge plus local cabins to rent, activities (snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and more) and natural beauty a-plenty. Located along highway 3 east of Hope it’s a long-time favourite for many but still a well-kept secret in some ways. Less busy than local mountain destinations and with far less commercial development, this is a great place to enjoy some of BC’s beauty with a lot less hustle and bustle.

Whistler

Whistler is world-famous – and it’s right here in our own backyard. It’s a bit of a longer drive than some of the destinations on this list but it’s certainly worth it and still close enough to be considered a quickie winter getaway near Vancouver. A large alpine-style village full of shopping, restaurants, spas and much more. You don’t even need to be interested in skiing to make this a great getaway in winter. But bonus if you want to ski: Blackcomb Mountain and Whistler Mountain feature some of the best runs in the world. Sign the kids up for some lessons and head out on your own adventure for an hour or two.

Sun Peaks

A longer drive – schedule at least four hours, likely longer and have your snow tires on for the Coquihalla – but a drive that’s well worth it for the beautiful scenery and great skiing once you arrive. Sun Peaks is just outside Kamloops and is a popular local destination with a small alpine-style village of hotels and condos, complete with a handful of restaurants and shops. If you loved Whistler in the 1980s, you’ll love Sun Peaks now. (And come back in summer for mountain biking and hiking on the ski trails.)

Squamish

There’s a reason that this town has been booming the last few years with countless families from the Lower Mainland pulling up stakes down here to live up there: it’s beautiful, fun, and family-friendly. But you don’t have to be a resident. Head out for a weekend trip to enjoy this small community. Midway between Vancouver and Whistler, this mountain town has trails, hiking, rock climbing, and much more through spring, summer, and fall – and plenty in the winter months, too. There’s eagle watching, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and much, much more. A few of the local hotels feature pools the kids can spend the evening swimming in. And from downtown Vancouver, it’s well under two hours to get there.

Downtown Vancouver

Skip the driving altogether and enjoy a staycation in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Use one of the discount “surprise” hotel websites – select the price and the star rating without knowing exactly which hotel it is – or splurge on a favourite destination with amenities you know you’ll enjoy. Then take in the sights like a tourist in your own town: Stanley Park, Gastown, the great restaurants, and more. Check out some of our recent local roundups for best bets on family-friendly museums and galleries, shopping districts, and monthly events to fill up your staycation schedule.

Harrison Hot Springs

Head east past Abbotsford and Chilliwack, then north past Agassiz to the tiny community of Harrison Hot Springs. Known primarily for its biggest hotel – the Harrison Hot Springs Resort, which features unique hot springs pools – there are actually a dozen or more options for accommodations in the area. Take a long walk along the lake, swim in the local public hot springs pool (the pools at the resort are for guests only), or head another 40 minutes up the road to Sasquatch Provincial Park for some fishing lakes and walking trails if the weather is agreeable. There are plenty of local shops and restaurants, and though this destination is known for its summertime beach appeal, it’s a lovely destination all year round.

Gulf Islands & Vancouver Island

Dozens of options for winter getaways near Vancouver are just a ferry ride away. Do you want a big city experience with shopping, museums and more? Head to Victoria, the capital of BC and the largest city on Vancouver Island. How about a small island cottage right on the beach? Then look into Galiano or Salt Spring or the other Gulf Islands. Storm watching? Take a ferry over to Vancouver Island and head west to the far coast and enjoy a few days in Ucluelet or Tofino. Along the way, explore artisan shops, small markets (check out Coombs, with the famous “goats on roof”) as well as countless natural spaces to hike, wander, or simply enjoy the view. Snow is rare but rain is plentiful – bring your umbrella.

Best Alberta Winter Family Getaways from Calgary - SavvyMom

Best Alberta Winter Family Getaways from Calgary

If thoughts of snowy days and colder temperatures are getting you down, we’ve got good news! There are fantastic getaway options for any time of year, but winter is one heck of a magical time to explore all of the beauty Alberta has to offer. And many great destinations are perfect for Alberta winter family getaways that are just a short drive from Calgary.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect spot to hit the slopes for some skiing or snowboarding or just want a fun place for a change of scenery, we’ve rounded up some of the best Alberta winter family getaways that you and your kin can take ASAP – how about this weekend?

Alberta Winter Family Getaways from Calgary

1. Canmore and Banff, AB

An Alberta winter family getaways list wouldn’t be complete without mention of Canmore and Banff. Although the two towns have many of their own distinct features that make them wonderful to visit on their own, we’ve stuck them together because we firmly believe if you’re in the area, you’ve gotta visit both! Canmore has many opportunities for adventure, from caving to cross country skiing and mountain biking to dog sled adventures and snowshoeing. For hiking fans, there are plenty of trails nearby to explore, including Grotto Canyon, where you can see spectacular frozen waterfalls. Some of our favourite restaurants in town include Crazyweed and Red Rock Pizza.

After you’ve had your fill of fun in Canmore, head over to Banff for even more awesomeness! Anytime we visit Banff, our family always makes a point to visit the stunning Fairmont Banff Springs hotel to wander the grounds. We also love to visit the cute little shops on Banff Avenue (we can never leave without getting a candy apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory). For nearby skiing and snowboarding, check out Mount Norquay and Sunshine Village.

Last year, one of our winter highlights in Banff was checking out Nightrise, an immersive experience at the Banff Gondola. The experience opened this year on December 2 and runs until the end of February. Created by Montreal’s Moment Factory with the participation of the Stoney Nakoda Nation, Nightrise brings guests the opportunity to experience beautiful light and multimedia displays and original soundscapes as they enjoy Rockies-inspired food and drinks.

2. Lake Louise, AB

Lake Louise is another popular Alberta winter family getaways spot to visit, and with its stunning snowy views, it’s easy to see why. One of the top reasons to visit Lake Louise is to visit the Lake Louise Ski Resort, which has been voted as the number one ski resort in Canada for three years in a row. In front of the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, there is much fun to be had, including sleigh rides, ice skating on frozen Lake Louise, and visiting the spectacular Ice Magic Festival – a world class ice carving event – which will return to Lake Louise in 2023. Nearby, there are plenty of opportunities for winter hikes, snowshoeing, dogsledding and more!

3. Sylvan Lake, AB

Sylvan Lake is a ton of fun to visit any time of year, but the winter is jam-packed with reasons to enjoy the great outdoors. Once the lake freezes over, the town makes a point of enjoying everything the slippery surface has to offer! There’s ice skating on three separate rinks, perfect for a leisurely skate or a game of shinny. At night, the ice is illuminated by colourful lights embedded under the surface. After you’ve taken off your skates, be sure to visit the giant ice slide which gets constructed every year in mid-February. If you’ve always wanted to try ice fishing, why not rent a heated ice shack and some fishing poles and see if you can make a catch? And that’s not all there is to do! Hop on an ice bike or snow kart – part go-kart and part snowmobile – for a ride across the ice, or strap on some snowshoes or cross-country skis to trek through the snow. All the equipment you need can be rented from Sun Sport Rentals if you don’t have your own!

There are plenty of cute places to stay in the area, but I’ve got my eye on this Cozy A-Frame cottage for my next visit!

4. Crowsnest Pass, AB

A couple summers ago, my family and I had a chance to drive out to Blairmore to stay in one of the themed cottages at Charmed Family Resorts, and I’ve gotta tell you – it was magic from start to finish. Our kids couldn’t believe their eyes when they passed through the gate into the resort which currently has 7 fairytale cottages (and another four on the way) complete with wood-fired hot tubs, outdoor fire pits, and adorable accommodations inside. Our family stayed in Rapunzel’s cottage, which had a queen sized bed and two loft spaces with a queen and two twin beds. The electric fireplace inside would be perfect for one of the most delightful Alberta winter family getaways!

The nearby towns of Blairmore and Coleman have some must-visit restaurants, including The Rum Runner, The Pass Beer Co. and The Cherry on Top Bakery and Koffee Shop. Iconic sites nearby include Lundbreck Falls, Frank Slide and The Miner’s Path. For skiing and snowboarding, Pass Powderkeg is close by and boasts affordable day or night skiing, while Fernie Alpine Resort is a short 45-minute drive away if you’d prefer to ski the mountains.

What are your favourite trips to take from Calgary during the winter? We’d love to hear them in the comments!

The Gift of Live Theatre This Holiday Season

I love live theatre. The anticipation the audience feels as the lights dim, the music starts and people settle into their seats to enjoy the show. As a parent, it has always been important to me to expose my kids to theatre—community theatre, major musicals, plays, pantomimes—so they can learn an appreciation of what actors do by going out on a stage and giving a part of themselves to the audience.

Beyond an appreciation for actors and their craft, kids can learn a lot from live theatre. They can learn how to sit still and pay attention, how to suspend their disbelief and imagine that what is happening on stage is real, how to applaud to show their appreciation and how to…boo? That last one is is what they can learn by watching a Ross Petty Production.

Back in 2014 we took our kids to see their first Ross Petty Production, Cinderella, and they loved it. This year, after 25 years of live shows, Ross and the rest of his merry band of players hang up their costumes for good.

This year’s holiday pantomime will be the last, which is just one of the many reasons you should go see Peter’s Final Flight: the PAN-Tastical Family Musical this holiday season.

Peter’s Final Flight is playing at the historic Elgin Theatre

The Eligin Theatre has been host to 25 years of Ross Petty Productions and is the lower of two stacked theatres—that’s right, the Winter Garden Theatre is stacked seven stories above the Elgin. They are the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world—expect looks of disbelief on your kids’ faces when you tell them that there is another theatre on top of the one they are sitting in.

Fun for kids AND adults

We know, sometimes parents take one for the team and sit through something their kids love that they just can’t stand (I’m looking at you Calliou). Ross Petty’s musicals are fun for the whole family—there may even be some jokes in there that only the adults in the crowd will understand—but between the musical mash-ups of today’s hit music and the slapstick performances by the talented cast of Canadian performers, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Peter Pan like you have never seen him before

With a smart script and jokes for days you will barely recognize the classic story. Ever since Peter Pan defeated Captain Hook, Neverland has enjoyed a long run of peace, quiet and lawn bowling! This is mostly thanks to fairy Plumbum’s magic cloaking spell, which has kept the island hidden from the villains of the world. Unfortunately, while trying to log into her Netflix account, Plumbum accidentally shut down the cloaking spell and revealed their location! With Neverland now exposed, Hook’s wife Helga, and her inherited sidekick Smee, have returned to avenge her husband, defeat Peter Pan, and destroy the legendary Heart Of Neverland!

Ross Petty returns to the stage for one last round of boos

After a long career that includes Broadway, London’s West End and numerous TV and film productions, producer and actor Ross Petty is returning to the Elgin for a few more boos…and one last bow. Thousands of kids and families have been introduced to the wonder of live theatre through the annual holiday musical and they all have Ross to thank for that. If you’ve ever seen one of Ross Petty’s annual productions, you will know that not only does he encourage, but also thrives on the boos he receives from the audience. You won’t want to miss the experience of booing him one last time, I know my family will be there, booing as loudly as we can.

Peter’s Final Flight: the PAN-Tastical Family Musical is at the Elgin Theatre until January 7. Tickets start at $29 and make a great holiday gift. Get your tickets here.

How to Stock Your Medicine Cabinet Like a Pro - SavvyMom

How to Stock Your Medicine Cabinet Like a Pro

Being a parent means being ready for anything—and that includes all of the bumps, bruises and infections our kids come home with every other day (or at least what feels like every other day). And while a bottle of children’s fever reducer is essentially liquid gold at the moment, that isn’t the only important element of a well-stocked family medicine cabinet. What about something for those scraped knees, itchy eyes, and aching ears? You’ll be reaching for a package of Polysporin more often than anything else in the cupboard—trust us, we’ve been there.

When your child isn’t feeling great, you’ll be glad you thought ahead and fully stocked your medicine cabinet. Here’s a list of recommended, doctor and pharmacist-approved products that are conveniently available over-the-counter. Consider grabbing one of each next time you’re out—you’ll be so glad you did.

Essentials to Stock Your Medicine Cabinet

Polysporin Antibiotic Eye Drops

These easy-to-use, doctor-recommended antibiotic drops are available without a prescription. That’s great news when your child suddenly shows signs of a super-contagious—and super uncomfortable!—infection like pink eye. (If you’ve got a child in daycare or elementary school, that day is coming.) Keep some Polysporin Antibiotic Eye Drops on hand to help eliminate infection-causing bacteria while reducing your child’s pink eye symptoms in no time. And yes, these drops also work on adults—good to know when your own eyes start to itch. Polysporin Antibiotic Eye Drops are available for $17-24 at most pharmacies and other retailers.

Polysporin Plus Pain Relief Ear Drops

If you suspect your child has swimmer’s ear or another common ear infection, these over-the-counter antibiotic ear drops will quickly relieve the pain while eliminating that infection-causing bacteria. It also speeds up the healing process, helping your little one feel better faster. Be sure to keep a bottle in your medicine cabinet on a regular basis—the next time your child wakes up with an earache in the middle of the night, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief knowing it’s there. Polysporin Plus Pain Relief Ear Drops are available for $17-24 at your local pharmacy and other retailers. Pro tip: this is a great product to bring on vacation! Those hotel pools, hot tubs and ocean waves won’t be able to mess with your kids’ ears when you’ve got the drops.

Polysporin Complete Antibacterial Ointment

It doesn’t matter if you’re two, 12 or 72 years old—if you fall and scrape your knee, you’ll be reaching for Polysporin Complete Antibacterial Ointment. You’ve probably used Polysporin ointment on minor scrapes and cuts since your own childhood, so you already know it’s going to work super well. Not only does Polysporin speed up healing, help prevent infection, and provide fast pain relief, it can also help minimize the look of scars. Not bad for a little tube of goop! Polysporin Complete Antibacterial Ointment is available at your favourite retailers for between $17-27. Grab one for your medicine cabinet and another one for your purse or diaper bag. Take it from a seasoned parent: it will come in handy at the park.

Childhood injuries and illnesses may be unpleasant, but they’re super common. Here are a few more practical items to complete your family’s medicine cabinet:

  • A small first aid kit that includes tweezers, cleansing wipes, gauze, and bandages
  • Child-friendly electrolyte replacement beverages (a must-have if your child gets a stomach bug)
  • A child-safe antihistamine (in case of allergic reaction)
  • Some soft ice packs (keep them in the freezer, of course!)

Once you’ve checked these items off your list, your family will be prepared for just about any bumps, scrapes, or icky germs the kids bring home. And because Polysporin products are available without a prescription, they can be conveniently purchased whenever you need them. Polysporin is the #1 brand recommended by doctors and pharmacists, providing a safe and effective way for parents to care for their kids’ minor medical problems at home. You’ve got this, Mom and Dad—now, if only there was a way to make kids actually listen when we yell, “be careful!” or “watch out!” as they run towards their next bump!

Thanks to Polysporin for partnering with us on this informative post.

Take Out Christmas Dinner in Toronto - SavvyMom

Where to Order Take Out Christmas Dinner in Toronto

Christmas traditions vary dramatically from family to family, but one consistent element is that the holidays are a lot of work, especially for parents in Toronto. One reason for all that work? That near universal tradition of a big and (hopefully) delicious meal. But what if this year you outsourced that momentous task to someone else? That’s right, instead of spending hours prepping dinner, all you need to do is pick up a pre-made take out Christmas dinner in Toronto (or in some cases have it delivered) and then toss it in the oven to warm it up.

While not quite as many restaurants are offering Christmas dinners to-go as in years past (heads-up westenders, the Lakeview’s famed deep-fried turkey is eat-in only this year), there’s still a nice selection of spots where you order your meal.

Below, we round up eleven Toronto-based caterers and restaurants that are serving up multi-course Christmas dinners to-go. While turkey is the star of most of these meals, we’ve made sure to feature a few other main course options, including vegetarian choices. We’ve also tried to include spots that cater to a range of price points and crowd sizes. While we’ve included the ordering deadline when known, we do encourage you to place your order ASAP to guarantee your meal.

Where to Order Take Out Christmas Dinner in Toronto

Barque

299 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto

Want a turkey dinner with a meaty twist this year? Then check out the Winter BBQ Meats box offered by beloved BBQ spot Barque. For $134, you’ll get enough smoked turkey breast with salsa verde, beef brisket and chopped pork for four people (all that meat just needs to be re-heated). For your sides, add on the Winter Sides Package for 4, which costs $42 and includes Caesar salad, southern collard greens and BBQ fries. Several other add-ons are also available, including mac and cheese and baby back ribs. All orders must be placed at least 48 hours before you want to pick your meal up.

Corbin Catering & Foods

1670 Kingston Rd., Toronto

Customers return year after year to snap up Corbin Catering & Foods’ delicious takeout turkey dinner. For $55 a person (minimum two-person order), you get slow roasted turkey breast and thigh, mixed herb roasted potatoes, maple glazed baby carrots, and wild mushroom bisque with puffed wild rice and more, including a flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Want something other than turkey? Corbin cooks up a couple of other options, including a spiced lamb chop dinner that runs $75 per person. Dinners can be delivered or picked up from December 20 until noon on Christmas Eve.

The Ellery Market

1870 Danforth Ave.

Known for its focus on local, fresh ingredients, The Ellery Market has assembled three different holiday takeout menus, all in the $50-$54 per person range. The Classic menu is built around roast turkey breast and starts off with assorted “nibbles” such as local cheeses. For sides, it features leek brown butter Yukon mash, roasted squash medley, gravy avec au jus and more. For dessert, there’s cherry-thyme panna cotta with Montmorency cherries. The duck option features all of that but with the turkey swapped out for a King Cole duck confit leg. Have a vegetarian or vegan on your guest list? The Ellery can easily accommodate them, with a menu that includes delicata squash stuffed with quinoa and cranberries.. All orders must be submitted by December 18 and must be picked up on December 24 between 10am and 2pm.

Farm Boy

Various Locations

While most of the big grocery store brands now offer some version of a pre-made Christmas turkey dinner, the consensus from local Facebook parenting groups is that Farm Boy offers the superior grocery store meal. For $179.99, enjoy either a roast turkey or glazed ham and an assortment of sides including cranberry apple sausage stuffing, chive mashed potatoes and roasted shredded Brussel sprouts. Either protein option will feed six to eight people. Farm Boy doesn’t have a hard order deadline, but it does encourage people to secure their dinners ASAP. All meals must be picked up sometime between December 22 and December 24.

Louix Louis

St. Regis Hotel, 325 Bay St., Toronto

Looking to splash out on Christmas dinner? Then you have to check out Louix Louis’ Holiday Festival Feast. The turkey option, serves six and runs $495, stars a whole roasted free-range turkey, roasted chestnuts soup, bread, two salads, and six sides including roasted Brussels sprouts and brioche bread stuffing with apricots and cranberry. And to top all that deliciousness off is an almond praline mousse Yule Log. If you prefer, you can swap the turkey for a AAA Canadian roast of prime rib (this package costs $475) or for $36, add on Louix Louis’ truly over-the-top King’s Cake, a 13 (!) layer chocolate cake. No delivery is available, the feast must be picked at the hotel, but you can pick it up on December 24 or the 25.

McEwan Catering

38 Karl Fraser Rd., Toronto

Looking for selection? Then you need to check out what well-known McEwan Catering has on offer. Go for the classic Cooked Turkey dinner, which starts at $345 for eight to 10 people and comes with roasted root vegetables, freshly baked bread, homemade stuffing and more. Or change things up and opt for one of the many other choices, such as salmon, surf and turf and even a seafood fest.

You can also easily add on supplementary products from McEwan’s extensive pantry. Whatever you select, make sure to place your order at least 72 hours prior to when you want to either pick up your order or have it delivered.

Mira Mira

1963 Queen St. E & 1372 Queen St. E, Toronto

Beloved east-end restaurant Mira Mira offers both a two-person ($120) and a six-person ($360) turkey dinner package that contains carved thigh and breast maple Dijon turkey, arugula salad, smoked cheddar whipped potatoes, fresh baked dinner rolls and more, including apple pie for dessert. Need to order more portions? That’s easily done, as is adding on a nice bottle of wine. All meals must be picked up on either December 23 from either of Mira Mira’s two locations or on December 24 from its Beaches restaurant.

Mr. Good Meats

Feed your family while also nourishing others with an order from Mr. Good Meats. This online caterer is well-known for its support of The Red Door Family Shelter. Mr. Good Meats offers two main holiday dinners. The Classic Christmas Dinner features slow roasted turkey with traditional sage stuffing and all the usual trimmings including cranberry compote, homemade gravy, whipped potatoes, and honey glazed carrots. This meal starts at $154.99 for four people, with the option to double it to feed eight people. Want to take things up a notch? There’s also a deluxe Christmas dinner available that runs $369.99, feeds 10, and includes slow cooked AAA roast beef with traditional au jus. Plenty of add-ons are also available, including an appetizer pack that features six kinds of appetizers that will take your party to the next level. No pickup option is available; instead, Mr. Good Meats will deliver your meal to your door on December 23 or 24.

Reign

Fairmont Royal York, 100 Front St. W

Here’s another decadent option from one of Toronto’s leading hotels. Choose from either a cider and thyme-brined Ontario free-range turkey or a royal honey and grainy mustard glazed leg of ham. Each protein is accompanied by a cornucopia of sides including butternut squash and sweet potato bisque, brioche popover rolls, maple glazed vegetables, and even a choice of pumpkin or apple pie. Each meal is designed to serve either four or eight people, with pricing starting at $300. You can also easily add on additional menu items. Orders must be placed before noon on December 22 for pick-up on December 24 or 25.

Smokin Bones Barbecue & Catering

707 Dundas W St., Toronto

Expecting a big crowd? Then Smokin Bones’ assorted holiday dinners might be perfect for your family. Four different packages are available, each serving a minimum of eight people. The $21.95 per person ‘Tis the Season option included sliced white and dark roasted Ontario turkey meat and all the traditional sides, such as apple and sage stuffing, buttered green beans, and Yukon gold mashed potatoes, are included. The $25.95 per person Season of Giving package features all of that tastiness, plus a baked holiday ham with glazed pineapple. Not a fan of turkey? Then consider the Feast of the Season option, which is built around a lemon and herb scented roast chicken and costs $18.95 per person. Place your order, which can be delivered or picked up from now up until and including Christmas Day, by December 20.

Summerhill Market

446 Summerhil Ave., Toronto

Summerhill Market’s take out Christmas dinner is so beloved that it’s actually available year-round. Known for its generous portions, each meal comes with a mix of dark and light turkey, French green beans, maple roasted butternut squash, buttermilk smashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce. Everything is packaged for a quick and easy warmup in your oven. Dinners are priced $38 per person. Orders must be placed at least 72 hours ahead of your preferred pick-up date, which can include the morning of December 25 (delivery up until December 24 is also available).
