Eczema in Kids

What Parents Need to Know About Raising Kids with Eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition, sometimes hereditary, but often random. While it’s not contagious, it can be a very annoying and uncomfortable problem, especially for children. A specialist such as a dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and individualized treatment plan to help parents manage their child’s eczema and control any flare-ups. In the meantime, here’s some helpful information if you’re raising kids with eczema.

What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis, is essentially inflammation of the skin. This inflammation causes a rash or scaling of the skin, which can be very uncomfortable. It may be hot, weepy, swollen, or itchy.

Eczema most commonly appears before the age of 5, with 60% of sufferers experiencing symptoms before the age of 1. The Canadian Dermatology Association estimates that approximately 17% of Canadians will experience eczema at some point in their lives.

While the areas of the body that eczema effects vary with age, babies and young children typically experience eczema as a patchy rash on the face, elbows, and knees, or as diaper rash. Other common spots include behind the knees, inside the elbows, on the sides of the neck, and on the wrists, ankles, and hands.

What Causes Eczema?

Eczema triggers are often unique to each individual, which makes tracking flare patterns important for understanding what’s causing your child’s eczema. However, there are some common causes of eczema, including:

  • Cold, dry weather
  • Heat, humidity
  • Fragrances in personal care items
  • “Natural” ingredients, including aloe and coconut oil
  • Dyes
  • Preservatives
  • Laundry detergent residue
  • Foods
  • Stress
  • Sweat
  • Hot showers or baths
  • Germs

Additionally, those who have asthma or allergies often suffer from eczema. And as anyone who is caring for baby’s food allergies knows, triggers can change over time. So what used to bother someone might stop, while new triggers pop up.

What Treatments Are There for Kids with Eczema?

The most effective treatments for kids with eczema involve preventing flares in the first place. Ensuring a consistent, proper hygiene routine is key for many people. That said, when a flare happens and your little one is sore and/or itchy, there are some treatments that can help soothe their skin.

Wet wrapping

Wet wrapping is a treatment technique best used if your child is hot and itchy from their eczema, and is waking in the night as a result. It is also indicated when the skin is bleeding, or the eczema persists despite the use of cortisone ointments. The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne has a detailed guide on wet dressing application, which is best done before bedtime.

Frequent and consistent moisturizing

The National Eczema Association suggests keeping skin well moisturized as a means of controlling eczema, since moisturizers help protect the outermost layer of skin (or skin barrier), and people living with eczema often have a damaged skin barrier, making their skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, and bacteria.

Topical medications

Corticosteroid creams, solutions, gels, foams, and ointments can help to quickly relieve itching and reduce inflammation for kiddos dealing with an eczema flare. They are available over the counter or by prescription and should be applied as directed by a doctor, usually right after a bath and before moisturizing.

Other remedies

A cool compress can also be effective for reducing the discomfort caused by eczema, and some doctors might recommend taking an antihistamine before bed if a flare is causing your little one to lose zzzs. The Canadian Dermatology Association also notes that phototherapy (regular exposure to specific rays of ultraviolet light) is a very effective treatment for those with severe eczema. There’s also some research that shows Lactobacillus-containing probiotic strains may reduce eczema severity in children age 3 and under.

Things to Avoid When Your Kids Have Eczema

It is important that children with eczema avoid their triggers to prevent flares. Since triggers are unique to each child, it’s important for parents to keep track of any patterns they notice as to when their child’s eczema flares.

The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends keeping baths and showers short, moisturizing immediately afterwards, and using mild cleansers to help avoid making eczema worse.

If ingredients in personal care products irritate your little one’s skin, be sure to do a “spot test” by applying a small amount of any new product to any trouble spot, and wait a couple of days to see if there is a reaction.

Moisturizers for Eczema

Finding products that are safe to use with your child’s eczema can take a bit of trial and error. Even products with natural ingredients can cause irritation, so be sure to read labels carefully, and spot test before applying to a larger area. Claims such as hypoallergenic, gentle, or 100 percent pure are meaningless when it comes to sourcing eczema-friendly products.

The National Eczema Association has an NEA Seal of Acceptance™ program for products that have been created or intended for use by persons with eczema or severe sensitive skin conditions, which is a good starting point for parents looking for eczema-friendly products for their child. It allows parents to filter by product type, age group or brand, as well as unwanted ingredients.

Tips for Successfully Camping with Kids - SavvyMom

Tips for Successfully Camping with Kids

If you love camping, you love camping. And if you’ve never camped, it seems daunting. But if you’re looking for local, less-expensive travel destinations this summer, you might want to give camping a try. Another benefit of camping with kids is that you don’t have to worry about dealing with passports and the still-inconsistent rules around vaccinations and masking.

But just what do you need to know when it comes to being one with nature when you have kids in tow? While I was a heavy backcountry camper before having kids, our family has been camping since my oldest was four and my youngest was one. Here are the things we’ve found key to successfully camping with kids.

Tips for Successfully Camping with Kids

Pick a destination

Perhaps the most important factor when it comes to camping with kids is choosing the right destination. If your kids are little or get car sick easily, a spot within a couple of hours of home is probably the best. If your kids are older or don’t mind spending time on the road, you can choose a destination a little further afield. Wherever you land, be prepared to take plenty of breaks for when nature calls or people are hungrier for more than their car snacks. (Side note: pack car snacks.)

When picking a camping spot, consider how remote you want to go and what sort of experience you’re looking for. There are plenty of provincial parks and crown land that offer a rugged, disconnected camping experience. There are also those with electric sites, flush toilets, and showers, that are close to major centres. You can backpack or canoe your gear into a remote site, or simply drive up and set up in a campground. The options are endless, though I must say Ontario has some phenomenal provincial parks.

If you’re new to the idea of camping with kids, a backyard vacation is a great place to start.

Make a list

Just like Santa, when camping with kids you should be making a list and checking it twice (or even three times!) to make sure you have everything you need before heading out. There’s no worse feeling than getting to your site and realizing you’ve left something important – potentially hours away – at home. (This happened to us one year when we got to our site and realized we’d left our youngest’s walking cast for his broken leg at home and had to make the two-hour drive home. Don’t be like us, make a list!)

Start with the big stuff – your tent, sleeping bags, and stove with fuel. But don’t forget the little things either – like bandages in case of scrapes and falls, or dish soap for cleaning up after meals. With Care has an excellent and very thorough essential family camping packing list on their website, for free download.

Pack the night before

Pack as much of your gear the night before, so that you can hit the road early and aren’t dealing with any unexpected fit problems with impatient little travellers hounding you about when you’re leaving. Make sure to pack in-car entertainment for the kiddos, as well as snacks. A portable DVD player or iPad comes in handy for longer trips, and magnetic board games offer plenty of fun. You can always stick to the classics like red car blue car, or I-Spy if that’s more your style. Snacks such as granola bars and fresh fruit are perfect for on the road, and a refillable water bottle is great for in the car and at the campsite.

Meal planning when camping with kids

I cannot stress enough how important meal planning is when camping with kids. It can take longer to cook things on a camp stove or over a campfire than at home, and kids (at least mine) have no patience. You can’t go wrong with basics like cereal for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. Lots of snacks (chips, cookies, fruit, veggies) will fill in the gaps until dinner. Getting the kids involved in coming up with some meal ideas ahead of time will also get them excited for the adventure.

Some pro camp food tips I’ve picked up over the years include:

  • Cook dinners at home before you go and freeze them in containers/storage bags. Once you’re at your site, you only have to heat and eat, and they double as an ice block in your cooler.
  • Do not plan to cook dinner your first night. You’re going to be worn out from the trip and setting up your gear, and the last thing you’ll want to do is cook dinner as the sun is setting. Stick with something easy the first night.
  • Costco sells huge packages of precooked bacon. Take the precooked bacon. You won’t be dealing with grease in potential bear country, and you can scramble up your eggs that much quicker in the morning.
  • Use blocks of ice instead of cubes. When packing your cooler, put a layer of blocked ice on the bottom. This will stay colder and last much longer than cubes.
  • Skip the bottled water. If you’re camping at a provincial park, you’re mostly safe to drink the water. There may be a water advisory where you’re heading, so it’s always best to check before heading out. If you’re heading backcountry camping, a water filtration system is worth the investment so you’ve always got safe drinking water without the weight (and waste) of packing in your own water.
  • Don’t be afraid of disposable. If you don’t want to mess about with dishes while camping, there’s no shame in taking along disposable plates and cutlery. (Plus, you can burn paper plates in your campfire.)
  • Camp food doesn’t have to be boring. Finally, there are so many delicious recipes available online for camp food – whether you’re cooking foil packets on the fire or want something you can walk about with – don’t be afraid to settle for boring food just because you’re camping.

Plan activities

If your kids think they’re “bored” at home, just wait until they’re out in nature, with nary a Netflix show in sight. This is why it’s important to plan activities to keep them busy. Card and board games are always a favourite, as are things like lawn darts or croquet. Check out maps ahead of time to see if there are any hiking trails around.

Provincial parks often run daily visitors programming geared towards families that is informative and fun. At some places you can rent canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, or even bicycles. Some parks have playgrounds (always a must, for our family) where kids can play and make new friends. One thing we’ve found helpful as our kids have gotten older is a good set of walkie talkies. They can have a bit of freedom around the park, and we can check in regularly.

You don’t have to plan every minute – otherwise it won’t be a relaxing vacation – but make sure you have a few fun activities in your back pocket to keep them entertained should boredom set in.

More tips for camping with kids

This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, but is what our family (and friends) has found helpful while camping with kids. (And camping with a baby is a whole other ballgame.) Some other tips to consider for a smooth experience camping with kids include:

  • Pack a favourite toy
  • Practice camping in the backyard at home
  • Get kids involved in packing, setup, and tear down
  • Dress in layers
  • Anticipate (and prepare for) potential challenges
  • Don’t forget safety
  • Keep a positive attitude
  • Be flexible
  • Embrace the dirt!

To All the Women Who Have Always Wanted to Be a Mother

To all of the women who have wanted to be a mother for as long as you can remember and are still trying to make that wish come true: I hear you.

To all of the women sitting in the waiting room of your fertility clinic, undergoing another month of cycle monitoring, scrolling through your newsfeed while you wait, only to see all of the happy Mother’s Day wishes and smiling baby pics, and wanting to ball your eyes out and scream at the top of your lungs: I hear you.

To all of the women who have had a positive pregnancy test only to lose it a few weeks later: I hear you.

To all of the women who cry in the shower after months of failed attempts, questioning why you can’t be a mother like everyone else you know: I hear you.

To all of the women who have felt angry when it seems like every friend, family member, and general acquaintance you know is welcoming a new baby, or a second, or a third, and deep down you so badly just want to carry one full term: I hear you.

To all of you women who have come to resent hearing, “It will be okay.” I hear you.

If You’ve Always Wanted to Be a Mother…

If you feel you are alone this Mother’s Day, know that you are not. For every smiling face in your newsfeed this week, there will also be one with a story behind it.

Motherhood is not for wimps and that started the moment you decided to try to become a mom.  The best things in life are worth fighting for they say, and trust me, some of you will put up such a fight.

Yes there will be a spike in flower sales and jewelry sales this weekend, but if you are grieving or depressed and still waiting for your Mom moment to come, it’s okay to cry this Sunday and resent and scream and perhaps even pound your pillow. You aren’t alone.

This Mother’s Day will mark a celebration of the second child who has come to call me Mom and I count my lucky stars every day for being given the gift of two beautiful baby girls. But I can’t help but always think of all of those forlorn faces in the fertility clinic waiting room, with their the tight lips and dark eyes. The faces of those women who so badly want something that comes so easy to so many others.

I sometimes feel guilty when I yell at my daughter in the morning to put her shoes on for the fifteenth time, because there are some mothers who would give anything to have a child—and here I am rushing mine along.

It was a long journey to have our second one, but this weekend I will count my blessings that I have diapers to change, arguments to settle, toys to pick up, tears to wipe away and absolute exhaustion like no other.

Motherhood is hands down the hardest job in the whole wide world, and once a women decides to make motherhood a reality and steps into the ring with no protection, it is a battle.

This Mother’s Day, let’s try to remember how lucky we are, and be kind to those still fighting for the chance to be given a mug declaring them the best mom in the world. I will proudly wear my homemade macaroni necklace and think of each and every one of you still fighting for it.

I hear you.

Green Decor Ideas for Outdoor Living - SavvyMom

6 Eco-Friendly Décor Ideas for Outdoor Living

Now that the warmer weather is finally here, it’s time to take advantage of the better temperatures and sunshine and spend more time outdoors. Take an eco-friendly approach to your outdoor living décor with our green decorating ideas that look great, and that won’t harm the earth.

Green Décor Ideas for Outdoor Living

Potted Herbs

Herbs planted up in vibrant terracotta or colour-coordinated ceramic containers make for outdoor decorations that are both pretty and useful. Head to your local thrift store to stock up on planters (it’s OK if they’re mismatched – that adds to the charm) and plant them up with your favourite herbs. We like rosemary, basil, and oregano, but use what you know you’ll use.

Local Flowers

Skip the imported blooms which are shipped from far and wide for whatever flowers are local and in season. You’ll save money making eco-friendly decorating choices and be supporting florists in your neighbourhood. Farmer’s markets can often be a good place to find local blooms.

Decorate with Edibles

No, not those edibles. Show off spring’s bounty by using fresh fruit and vegetables to decorate. Kale and chard in tall glass vases, citrus fruits piled high in wooden bowls and carrots with their tops intact standing up in mason jars all make for fun, eco-friendly decorating ideas to spruce up your outdoor spaces. The best part: the only cleanup required is eating what you’ve decorated with.

Soy or Beeswax Candles

Candles provide instant ambiance and sprinkling them across several surfaces is a simple way to add elegance to your outdoor evenings. Choose beeswax or soy candles over regular candles as an eco-friendly choice. Both of which burn more cleanly than other varieties. Beeswax tea lights in simple glass holders lined up down the center of a communal table, or clustered on smaller tables adds flattering light and warmth.

Colourful Blankets, Throws & Pillows

Since spring evenings can still be chilly, ensure you and any guests stay warm and your outdoor space looks great by having colourful blankets and throws on hand. They add a homey, decorative touch no matter where you stack them (several rolled up in large baskets or galvanized steel buckets look great). Choose bright colours and bold patterns to really make a spring statement.

Spruced-Up Garage Sale Finds

Create extra seating indoors or out and add a punch of colour to your party by upcycling salvaged stools and chairs. Paint them in some spring-ready hues like tangerine, pink, lavender, and turquoise and place them around your yard or in your home. They’re functional as well as being decorative in a rustic-chic way that’s perfect for outdoor living.

What Mom Really Wants for Mother's Day - SavvyMom

Want to Give Mom the Best Mother’s Day Gift? It’s This…

Mother’s Day is coming. It’s a day many moms look forward to. But, to be perfectly honest, some women also dread because they won’t get what they want.

Does that make us sound selfish? Not looking forward to a day to celebrate us because we won’t get what we want?

In all fairness, getting a gift for the woman who does, literally, everything, is no small task.

For a few years my kids would make me breakfast in bed. I would listen to the sounds emanating from the kitchen while laying under my covers. Waiting.

And waiting.

And waiting.

Little kids take forever to make a breakfast. Mothers around the world know this.

They would bring it upstairs with proud smiles pasted on their faces. My older son holding the tray filled with cold toast, cereal, pancakes, and juice, while my younger son carried a bouquet of fresh flowers. What more could a mother want, right?

Coffee. The answer is coffee.

The thing was, in my day-to-day life I eat the same breakfast every single day, and I eat it early before the whole family wakes up, before the sun is even up most days. This 10:30 a.m. breakfast my kids brought was not the breakfast my body was used to and it threw off my whole day, digestive-wise, if you catch my drift. Also, I hate fresh flowers. They die and I have to clean up the mess.

I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. I also didn’t want to keep having a Mother’s Day where I spent the bulk of my day on the toilet.

Leading up to Mother’s Day we are inundated with articles and commercials, telling us to get her chocolates, jewellery, flowers, or brunch at a ridiculously busy restaurant where we wait in line with hungry kids.

The thing is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of these things.

If this is what she wants.

And therein lies the crux of the Mother’s Day gifting problem.

What does Mom really want for Mother’s Day?

We’re not listening to the one person we are celebrating. In order to honour the person who impacts our lives in such a profound way, we need to ask her and listen to what she really wants. After three years of eating a carb-heavy, non-caffeinated Mother’s Day breakfast I sat down with my kids and husband to have a family meeting.

I told them what I really wanted was to simply sleep in a bit, eat my usual breakfast, and maybe go for a family hike. Later in the day I’d like to have some time to myself to hang out at the local bookstore. Oh, and I absolutely did not want to cook dinner or have to clean up afterwards.

From that day forward, that’s how we celebrated. Because no matter what the mom in your life asks for—jewellery, flowers, time to herself, lingerie—what she really wants is for someone to hear her.

Isn’t that what we all want?
