It’s that time of year again: The freedom (from school) was great for a while, but now the kids (and you) are a little restless (read: smacking each other over the head with Wiggles DVD cases and water guns).
You don’t need Supernanny—what you need is to get the kids out of the house and show them something that will hold their attention long enough for your equilibrium to be restored. And you’re in luck, because August in Ottawa looks like a month of festivals, and SavvyMom has checked out the options:
The Ottawa Lumière Festival, August 9 from 5–11 pm in Stanley Park, New Edinburgh. Short but sweet, this much-loved annual event celebrates the beauty and magic of light and lanterns. Dancers, musicians, stilt walkers and story tellers entertain against an enchanting backdrop of lantern sculptures. Children can make their own paper lanterns and carry them to the water. B.Y.O. Fairy wings!
The Ottawa Summer Greek Festival, August 14–24 at 1315 Prince of Wales Drive between Baseline and Meadowlands. It’s not specifically for kids, but there is much to enjoy for the whole family, including traditional Greek dancing and cuisine, an arts and culture court, and live Greek music. August 16 and 23 are designated Family Days from noon to 5 pm, with a balloon bounce, double slide, police car and fire truck, an appearance by the CHEO bear, and face painting (all face-painting proceeds will go to CHEO).
The Ottawa Folk Festival, August 14–17 at Britannia Park. Of course, the main attraction here is the music—performed on an impressive main stage and seven simultaneous daytime stages—but it doesn’t end there. There’s also a family area with plenty of activities for all ages, an ‘EnviroTent’ with environmental workshops, a food court with delicious ethnic and festive foods, and a tempting array of handmade crafts, instruments and fair-trade products for sale.
