January 27 is National Chocolate Cake Day and we’re thrilled about that fun fact this year. In our family, we enthusiastically search out random special occasions to celebrate, especially during the cold winter months when everything feels so blah, and I can’t imagine a better way to welcome the day than with plans in place to enjoy a slice of chocolate cake with the whole family after dinner.
As you may have suspected, chocolate is the most popular cake flavour and as such there are many variations of this classic confection, which include, but aren’t limited to:
- Chocolate layer cake
- Black Forest cake
- Devil’s food cake
- Flourless chocolate cake
- Fudge cake
- German chocolate cake
- Molten chocolate cake
- Red velvet cake
- Joffre cake
Also, a few fun facts about cake mixes:
- The first boxed cake mix was created in 1920.
- General Mills spent years researching cake mixes and released Betty Crocker’s ‘just add water’ cake mixes in 1947.
- The first boxed chocolate cake mix was sold by Pillsbury in 1948.
After the year we just had, we think this is a pretty great day to celebrate – just for fun. You can pick up a chocolate cake from a local bakery, make your own layer cake, or ask your older kids to prepare ‘the easiest chocolate cake you’ll ever make‘ by trying this recipe on their own. With supervision, 7-8-year-olds should be able to whip up this one-pan cake without any trouble.
