Movie Star Party Activities
Hit the red carpet in style with these sensational movie-themed party games.
Director Says…
Best for: Ages 1 to 3
A modified version of Simon Says, you can have some fun getting the kids to do silly poses.
You’ll Need:
- An adult to play ‘director’
- Space for the kids to move around
- Optional: Sunglasses, scarves (one for each child)
How to Play:
- Follow the same rules as Simon Says, only think movies: “Director Says: Give your biggest smile”, “Director Says: Dance on the spot”, “Director Says: Put on the sunglasses”. Adjust the game to fit the age of your guests. The older the kids, the more fun you can have with the options.
Red Carpet Obstacle Course
Best for: Ages 3 to 5
The stars are hitting the carpet, but they’ve got to get around the obstacles first!
You’ll Need:
- Costume items for girls (adult dress, boa, sunglasses, adult shoes)
- Costume items for boys (fun hat, dress coat, adult shoes, sunglasses)
- A long stretch for the ‘walk’ (or a red carpet—even better!)
- A hula hoop (or a taped circle on the floor)
- A chair
- Trivia questions about the birthday child suitable to the ages of the kids
- A stage to ‘stand’ on (a milk crate works well)
- A camera
- Small prizes (statuettes work well as options)
- A timer
How to Play:
- Set up the red carpet playing area—clear a long strip where the players can start. Put the piles of costume items at the beginning, the hula hoop a few feet ahead, then the chair a few feet after that, and put the milk crate at the other end for the ‘finish’.
- Have an adult or older sibling control the ‘timer’. Have another adult handle the interview, trivia and ‘camera’ stations.
- Each player has a turn. The other players act as frozen ‘statues’ on the red carpet that the player who is ‘It’ must manoeuvre around.
- The object is for the player to get into costume, then move along the red carpet, and go through each station as quickly as possible.
- Station One: Getting dressed in costume.
- Station Two: Hula hoop spotlight – this is an ‘interview’ spot where the player is asked to share something she likes about the birthday girl (read: “What’s your favourite game to play with Jenny?”).
- Station Three: Trivia chair – This is where you can ask a simple question about the birthday child (read: “What colour are Jenny’s eyes?”).
- Station Four: The stage – here is where the adult can take a fun photo of the child in his or her actor ‘pose’. These photos can later be sent out in thank-you cards.
- Award all of your players with statuettes at the end. (You can even personalize them based on their individual walk, such as ‘Funniest Pose’ or ‘Best Trivia Answer’.)
Good to Know: If you don’t want to time the relay, you can do it with music in the background to add some fun to it.
Name That Movie
Best for: Ages 5 to 8
Add extra fun to this spin on charades by having your guests ‘act out’ the movies in groups.
You’ll Need:
- A hat
- Slips of paper with the names of favourite kids’ movies or stories
- Optional: A box of costumes/props
How to Play:
- Put the kids into teams of two or three.
- Have the teams take turns pulling out a slip of paper (an adult can help them with the story description if necessary).
- The teams take turns ‘performing’ their piece. Give them a set time to put their ‘show’ together. Then, they perform the movie or story for the other teams who get to guess what movie they’re recreating.
Good to Know: It’s fun to have a box of basic props or costume pieces for this game so that each group can get really creative with their performance.
