It’s fast. It’s furious. And it just might be the best mind-body exercise since yoga made its comeback. Step aside Robin Hood, mamas and their kids are giving it their best shot at Archery Games Calgary.

In this immersive experience, two teams battle it out in an arena decked out like a forest. It’s similar to dodgeball, in that the goal is to hit the opposing team’s players to eliminate them from the game. Fortunately, parents don’t have to worry about balls being whipped at their child’s head. And the arrows are foam-tipped, making the activity suitable for the whole family.

A workout disguised as a game, this archery studio was originally intended for adults, but is also ideally suited for kids. Those over seven-years-old are welcome to play. Sessions begin with a referee patiently teaching how to shoot a bow and arrow before heading onto the course. Full face helmets and wrists guards are supplied by the facility, and you only need to bring a water bottle and running shoes.

The kids have a blast trying to hit their friends and ducking behind large foam pillars to avoid being a target themselves. The ref teaches participants several different games throughout the 75-minute session, which keep kid’s interest high. And it’s fine if littles want to leave the course and refine their skills in the target practice area.

It’s surprisingly quite the work out, so expect kids to emerge sweaty. Archery is also fantastic for developing those fine motor skills and improving hand eye coordination. Caregivers will find it very cool to witness their child’s progress by the end of the session.

If parents aren’t joining in the game, they can watch (or work) from picnic tables facing the course, or leave to knock off a few errands. You’ll hit a bull’s eye if you target this activity for the next PD day or birthday party.
