The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum (or The Farm as many families refer to it) has long been a family destination in Ottawa. Farm life is on full display in a hands-on way right in the heart of the city and we are so fortunate to be able to encourage our kids to explore the museum grounds, barns and structures while learning about where their food comes from, the importance of animals on a farm, and more.
Families who aren’t sure when to visit the museum next will be happy to hear about an upcoming free admission date, plus, we’ve gathered up information about their events and exhibits happening this fall.
Don’t forget that the museum is always free between 4 pm and 5 pm daily too!
Visit on September 25 for free
On Wednesday, September 25th, between 4 pm and 8 pm, you are invited to visit the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum for free! While parking fees will still apply, access to the museum itself will have no cost. There will be ice cream demonstrations, calf grooming and we know the kids will love to meet a rabbit! Access to the barns, play structure, and demo kitchen are all included as part of the museum’s Welcome Wednesdays event.
Daily Demonstrations at the Museum
Every day when it’s open, the museum offers up a variety of special activities and demonstrations for families to enjoy together. These demonstrations are included with your museum admission. The schedule can change from time to time (especially as the seasons change) and sometimes it’s a bit different every day, but when you visit the museum you’ll receive an updated hand out with the activities mapped out for that day.
Meeting the animals is always a highlight for the kids, and The Farm continues to incorporate those meet and greets with an up-close and personal visit at certain times of the day with some of the animals. For instance, in the morning, visit the rabbits and say hello, and in the afternoon head over to see what Hercules the Bull is up to!
At 4 pm, it’s time to watch the milking of the cows. When you visit for the Welcome Wednesdays free admission from 4 pm until 8 pm, we recommend you head over to the cow barn right away because the barn closes after milking time at 4:30.
The demonstration kitchen is always cooking up a tasty treat or nutritious recipe for you to duplicate at home. On the fall agenda is a demonstration about baking with seasonal fruits and vegetables, butter making, and baking with herbs. Our mouths are watering just thinking about all of the possibilities.
The Museum of Agriculture and Food has plenty of shade and beautiful trees on and surrounding the property, making it the perfect spot to enjoy an autumn picnic. Pack your own snacks or lunch to enjoy more of the day and daily demonstrations when you go.
Remember: Admission to the museum between 4 pm and 8 pm on September 25th is free!
Other things to note:
Yearly memberships are available to the museum, which include access to the Canada Science and Technology Museum and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
