The Ottawa Public Library is already a place where parents happily take their kids, especially during the summer. Kids can explore new worlds and discover new ways to enjoy a good book or two.
But beyond just the books, the Ottawa Public Library offers a variety of programming that will appeal to parents with children of all ages. This August, the local branches of the Ottawa Public Library continue to get kids involved with a series of workshops and special events.
And while there are activities and events throughout the year, we think parents may want a few new ways to keep the kids busy until school is back in session.
Here are some of the activities happening across the City of Ottawa at your local library branch over the next couple of weeks that we think your family will love. Visit the full website to look up your location to find out everything that is being offered!
In Greenboro, kids aged 8 and older can visit the Makermobile and create something from the maker cart. We love the ability to let our kids get creative and hands on. There’s a session happening Friday, August 17 at 2 pm.
For the game-loving kids, aged 6-12, check out Game On! On Thursday, August 23 at 2 pm at the Main branch (120 Metcalfe). Kids will have the chance to roll the dice, pick a suit or even grab a nunchuk! There are cards, board games and Wii, which means there’s tons of fun to be had.
The Osgoode branch is hosting an End of Summer Party, featuring the Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre on Monday, Aug 20, at 2 pm for all ages. (Cake is promised!)
If weekday sessions are difficult for your family, head over to the Metcalf village branch, Osgoode branch or Greely branch on Saturdays for Kids’ Craft Corner at 10:30. Drop in anytime. Perfect for parents/caregivers and children aged 3-12.
Head to Beaverbrook on Tuesday, August 28 at 2 pm for a hands-on “Summer Instrument Petting Zoo” experience! Children between the ages of 3 and 8 can try violin, cello, and guitar. Plus, hear Ottawa Suzuki Strings (OSS) students perform a mini-concert.
Maybe an evening pre-bedtime story session is best. On Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30 pm, visit the Osgoode branch for Stuffie Sleepover Storytime that lasts about 60 minutes. Dress the kids in their pajamas and bring teddy bears for a special storytime and craft. Then leave your stuffie for a sleepover and discover the fun things he/she gets up to overnight!
No matter the age of your child, the Ottawa Public Library has many opportunities across the City for your family to participate in. Beyond checking out books, the library is inviting families to step out of the pages and get hands-on together with their special programming.
