November is the true heart of fall. Crisp air, sweaters, piles of leaves and warm goodies from the kitchen. Busy moms always have half an eye on the holidays by now. But let’s not forget to enjoy the fall colours, pumpkin-spice everything, and our last few snowsuit-free days. Here are a few things you can do around Calgary to help make the most of the next month.
Get a jump on decorations. Why? There are only two options, really. You can dig up the holiday decorations, take a quick inventory of your stock, and then set aside an afternoon late in the month for decking the halls. Or you can frantically tear through boxes in mid-December searching for the tree stand while your kids scatter tinsel all over the rest of the house. It pays to plan. And if you need to pick up a few extras, Canadian Tire is actually a great place for one-stop holiday decor shopping; they have a large selection of everything from lights and trees to ornaments and wreaths.
Check out Winterfest. It’s happening at Ralph Klein Park on Sunday, November 19 from 1-3 pm. Enjoy free activities for kids of all ages, including crafts, a guided park tour, bird watching, and more. Why? It’s a great chance to get outdoors and do something fun outside in a month not typically known for being outdoor-play-friendly.
Take the family out to eat. Dining out and avoiding the mess at home is always a plus, especially during a busy month. But as parents, we know how difficult it can be to manoeuvre with little kids. Try any one of these 16 family-friendly restaurants we’ve found in the Calgary area and everyone’s sure to have an enjoyable evening.
Book your ride on the Polar Express. Visit the Aspen Crossing Railway website and book your family’s journey to the North Pole! Beginning on November 24 and running on select dates until Christmas Eve, kids can take a magical train ride complete with carols, hot chocolate and cookies, as well as a reading of The Polar Express book. Once you get to the North Pole, Santa will greet kids and everyone gets a sleigh bell (much to your delight, parents!) It’s a sweet, fun time for all to kick off the holiday season.
Snap a family photo. Fall is a beautiful time of year for family photos. Before it truly turns into winter, head out to one of these beautiful spots in the Calgary area for a gorgeous shot. And don’t forget to bring your best smiles.
Take a break. Sit back, relax, have a cup of coffee and enjoy your down time, your family time, your me time—whatever it is you need before the busy holiday season hits. Why? Because you deserve it. Enjoy!
