The kids have already had a month of fun in the sun, and the clock is slowly winding us towards the back-to-school season. With school shopping before us, keeping things on a budget without sacrificing family fun is a top priority. Here are some great ways to make some memories this weekend at these free (or cheap) family fests that the kids will love. (Just remember to keep water on hand and check about washroom options and parking before you go!)
Calgary Fringe Fest
(Aug 3-11)
We all know kids love theatrics, especially when they are the stars of the show. That’s why we love introducing them to some real theatrics during the very-affordable Calgary Fringe Festival. With a range of productions in varying locations in and around Inglewood, it’s a very affordable way to introduce theatre to the kids at a low price. Be sure to check the list to determine which shows are age-appropriate for your team.
Taste of Calgary
(Aug 9-12)
Expose the kids to some unusual flavours without the expense at this annual event in the Eau Claire Market area. With options ranging from $1 to $5 (tickets can be purchased at the event), the range of restaurants appeals to all ages. Be sure to pack a swimsuit to take advantage of the splash pad nearby so the kids can cool off between tasting. There will also be musicians, and other interactive events and a visit across the bridge to the playground at Prince’s Island Park is always a plus.
Calgary Sweet Corn Fest
(Aug 11)
It’s not corny at all to love this particular summer fest. The little ones especially will love the opportunity to visit Calgary’s Corn Maze and all its experiences for the small set. The Sweet Summer Corn Fest includes the corn eating contests (using the delicious Taber corn) and pony rides. While there is an admission fee for the Calgary Corn Maze, there is a multitude of activities for the kids and the corn fest makes for an extra element of fun.
Marda Gras Street Festival
(Aug 12, 10 am – 5 pm)
Get loopy in the Loop with the kids this summer: this street festival has a lot of appeal to all ages. Animal lovers will enjoy watching the pet pageant; live music and dance performances are sure to entertain and there will be Food Trucks on hand to feed the masses. The streets can get crowded, but it’s an annual fest that’s not to miss.
Franco Fest
(Aug 18)
While this one isn’t happening this weekend, we couldn’t leave out Franco Fest! Celebrate all things French culture at this upcoming festival. Located at Olympic Plaza, the Kids Zone offers crafts, games like tic-tac-toe frisbee, a bean bag toss and dancing with ribbons and hoops. There are live performances alongside cultural workshops and all located in downtown’s west end.
