My two-year-old has discovered chocolate. I kept it from him for as long as possible, but with two candy-craving teenage brothers in the house, it was inevitable that he would sample more than I hoped by this time in his short but very sweet life.
Thanks to said brothers, he knows all about Easter and the bunny and what he might be able to expect this weekend. Sadly, when it comes to treats he’s going to be a little disappointed, but fortunately for me, he’s discovered something else he loves almost as much as his beloved chocolate: playdough.
Enter my Easter playdough eggs. On the outside, they look just like any other plastic egg, but instead of being stuffed with a sweet treat, these ones contain some colour-coordinated playdough. My hope is that he’ll be so thrilled with the discovery of new and fresh playdough, he’ll forget all about the chocolate he was promised.
The how-to for this couldn’t be simpler. In fact, it’s easier than making a batch of cookies. Simply cook up some flour and water, add a bit of this and that, and voila… homemade playdough to stuff into plastic Easter eggs. Here’s the recipe:
- 1 1/3 cups flour
- ½ cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 package (85g) Jell-O, any colour
- 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the dough forms a ball. This should take approximately five minutes. Transfer to a bowl to cool. Knead with flour (about ¼ – ½ cup) until no longer sticky. Store in a ziptop baggie in the fridge.
To fill Easter eggs, break off a small amount of playdough and stuff into plastic Easter eggs. Place eggs in ziptop baggie in the fridge until ready to hand them out.
