Are you ready to celebrate the earth as a family? Sunday, April 22 is Earth Day and there are many ways to include the kids in your celebrations. You can focus on a park clean up in your neighbourhood, or plan to work on a bee-friendly garden in your own backyard. Maybe you want to take the kids to the library to find kid-friendly books about recycling and being eco-friendly, or let them get creative by making recycled crafts using materials in your blue box. The opportunities are endless. If you want to take part in an Earth Day event happening across the city on Saturday or Sunday, here’s how your entire family can be green this weekend.
Indigo Bring Back the Bees Event
Indigo has teamed up with Honey Nut Cheerios for an Earth Day event in many of their stores across Canada, including Ottawa. At 11 am on April 21, celebrate Earth Day in a Chapters location by listening to a story called Bella and Jack Bring Back the Bees. Everyone will receive a pack of wildflowers to plant in their own gardens to help encourage bee friendly plants and flowers to grow across the city.
Glebe Community Centre – Old Home Earth Day
At the Glebe Community Centre, parents can attend the Old Home Earth Day event and learn about how to reduce your home’s carbon footprint. There will be hands on DIY workshops and industry experts available to answer your questions. Bring the kids on April 21st between 10 am and 4 pm as there will be kid-friendly activities happening as well for them to participate in.
Community Clean Up at Mooney’s Bay
Head outdoors as a family and participate in the Earth Day Clean Up at Mooney’s Bay. This is an excellent way to get hands-on experience and connect actions with words when it comes to helping the earth. The community clean up invites neighbours, families and friends to help out and celebrate with family-friendly games, prizes and some refreshments. The event begins at 10 am on April 22 and runs until 2 pm. When you first arrive, you’ll want to register at the sign-in table to receive gloves and garbage bags. The Facebook page will be updating participants in case of a rain delay or change in plans.
Earth Day Celebrations at Dundonald Park
Visit Dundonald Park on Somerset Street West as it welcomes community members for Earth Day fun on April 22 from 10 am until 2 pm. This free event will begin the day with a strawberry ceremony, followed by the Ottawa Public Library story time and then a fun playtime for the kids with parachute games and bubbles, plus more activities for the family!
E-Waste Collection & Events at Lady Evelyn School
Celebrate Earth Day and clear the clutter in your house by getting rid of your old electronics. This event at Lady Evelyn School is taking place on April 21st from 10 am until 1 pm. Bring your E-Waste (scrap metals, computers, laptops, cell phones, TVs, monitors, cameras, small appliances, used batteries, small auto parts, etc) for safe recycling and plan to stay for fun activities like science experiments, a bake sale, seedling sale, family-friendly games, crafts and more. We love that there will be free coffee provided by Happy Goat Coffee for those who bring a reusable mug. If you aren’t able to make it to the event on Saturday, you can still ensure safe recycling of your e-waste products by dropping them off during the school’s additional drop off times on Friday from 4 – 7 pm and on Sunday between 9 am and 12 pm. Visit the Facebook page for full event details.
