One of the fun parts of watching kids grow up is finding out which hobbies or interests they’re passionate about. Is your child an aspiring chef? Maybe a wildlife biologist? Perhaps an athlete or photographer?
Whatever captures their fancy, it’s easier than ever to celebrate your child’s birthday with an activity that they love. If she enjoys the wilderness, try a scavenger hunt in the mountains. If pirates are his thing, thrill him with tales of buccaneers and buried treasure at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
Here are some ideas to help make your child’s next party one that they’re sure to remember:
For the creative types
Let the creativity flow at Luminous Elephant, an art studio on Granville Island. Kids of all ages will find something cool to create here: miniature piñatas, felt monsters, clay creatures, bath bombs, tie-dyed totes, stuffies, bead bracelets and crystal necklaces, to name just a few. If these ideas don’t hit the sweet spot, try a Polaroid party, a painting party, or a movie-making event, where your child can write, direct and edit a one-minute film with friends. We could go on, but the creative staff at the studio will be the experts at helping you find just the right party theme for your child.
For the sporty
If your guests are bursting with energy and you’re not sure how to keep them busy, a Sportball party might be just what you need. Kids will enjoy an action-packed hour of games and activities that will keep them moving. All of the equipment needed to entertain the children will be provided, and the fun will be organized and led by a Sportball coach. Then, when everyone is pleasantly worn out, you can bring out the refreshments to wrap up the celebration. Parties are suitable for ages 2 and up, and can be held at a Sportball venue in Dunbar, Oakridge, Killarney or Granville Island. You can also arrange for the coach to come to you.
For those with a design flair
Whether your child dreams of being a fashion designer or simply loves to create, a party at La Movida Sewing & Design Studios will provide an outlet for that creative energy. Located in Kitsilano, this unique studio offers parties for kids ages 8 and up. Guests will design and sew a project to take home, such as a stylish pencil case, or a monogrammed or emoji pillow. This is a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday, have fun, and learn new skills with friends. No previous experience is required. The sewing portion of the party is two hours.
For the sailors and pirates
Ahoy there! Here’s a celebration for those who love the sea: a party at the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Vanier Park. Children (ages 4 to 8) can choose one of four themes for their big bash. Discover the life of a pirate on the open seas with a pirate party. Meet the hardest working boat in the harbor with the museum’s salty tugboat crew. Uncover the secrets of mermaids, sea monsters and other legends of the sea, or learn about polar bears and narwhals in an Arctic animal adventure. All parties are led by trained museum staff and include crafts, stories, activities, and time to explore the museum’s galleries. Parties are two hours long and can accommodate up to 15 children.
For the yogis
A party at Yoga Buttons Studio provides a lively combination of yoga, games, music, dancing, and arts and crafts for children ages 2 and up. A typical event begins with a craft, followed by an hour of yoga and games, and then some time for food and cake. Any theme can be incorporated into the event; for example, unicorns, ponies, superheroes, dinosaurs, butterflies, teddy bears, etc., so let the studio know your child’s latest obsession and they’ll help bring the theme to life. Parties are suitable for up to 16 children.
For the nature lovers
Head to the top of Grouse Mountain for an unforgettable birthday adventure, any time of the year. How about a skating or sliding party, which includes playing in the snow and roasting S’mores on a fire? A scavenger hunt party is a great way to get outside and explore the mountain. Children that are interested in wildlife can be a ranger for a day, and do cool things like hunt for bear tracks. And, for those with an adventurous side, a survival-style party will keep kids busy building a shelter and snowshoeing or shooting some archery (depending on the season). The party includes Skyride admission to the top of the mountain, cupcakes, juice boxes, and any necessary gear rental.
