Birthdays aren’€™t the only thing my family likes to celebrate. In fact, we have quite a few annual traditions that elevate an ordinary occurrence into something just a little bit extra special.
Back to school is one of those events. I take a picture of the kids in the same spot in my yard each year, and buy new books for them to read in class during their designated reading time. It’€™s something we all look forward to, and I’€™m thankful for the tradition.

These small ideas start the school year off on a positive note, and are something we all look forward to. Here are a few other ways to creatively add a happy boost to your own little one’€™s first day of school. And if you happen to have your own special traditions please do share in the comments’€”I’€™d love to hear them.

First Day of School Interviews: Such a fun way to capture the first day of each school year. Store the sheets of paper in a pretty binder and keep the tradition going from preschool to high school.

Back-to-School Portraits: Take a photo of your wee one in their back-to-school outfit, and add some text to capture a list of their current favourites and likes. Wouldn’€™t it be fun to compare the answers over the years?

DIY Apple Plates: Celebrate the first day of school with a special breakfast, lunch or dinner, and dine off of these adorable apple plates that will please everyone at the table.

Buy a New Book: This is one of our favourite back-to-school traditions and new books are purchased for the kids to read in class or before bed.

Back-to-School Breakfast Dinner: This idea is completely adorable! Celebrate back to school with a gourmet breakfast served the night before classes start. Offer favourite cereals, donuts, chocolate milk, orange juice and fruit salad, and feast as a family.
