It’s not always easy being green. But at least it’s becoming easier thanks to two creative and environmentally conscious entrepreneurs.
Riva and Andrew Mackie opened the doors to Riva’s, The Eco Store just this spring. The store is a blend of city and country with lines of cutting edge and fashionable products brought to you in a display that is reminiscent of a small town general store.
Located west of 14th Street on trendy 17th Avenue, Riva’s, The Eco Store carries an impossibly vast array of products tied together with a healthy, green string. Furniture, skin care products, paint and clothing share space. For the eco-minded, it’s a one stop shop.
Treat baby to a latex crib mattress from Pixel Organics. Old fashioned spring mattresses free of fire retardant chemicals from Sleeptek are also available with prices starting at $365.
Revolutionary flushable, biodegradable gDiapers are priced at $38.99 for the starter kit. And avoid any plastic leaching with glass bottles from BornFree (starting at $13.95).
Once you’re finished feeding, changing and napping, you might want to take them out in cuddly recycled cashmere by e ko logic. While you’re out, pick up your non-toxic paint from YOLO Color House. Gallons start at only $49.95 and are tinted onsite with specially formulated non-toxic tints not typically available at other paint retailers. Oh, and don’t forget to deal with any left-over air born toxic particles with the Baby’s Breath from Austin Air. This room sized air purifier is available in pink and blue for $365 only at Riva’s in Calgary.
These products are only a small sample of what is available at Riva’s including clothing and jewellery for grown-ups. The in-store service is excellent and both Riva and Andrew have a wealth of knowledge to share. Design services are also available to customers looking to purchase home improvements or furniture.
Free parking is available underground although walking or taking transit supports The Eco Store philosophy. So try jumping on the eco train just in time for Earth Day and check out your green options at your friendly neighbourhood general store.
