While the actual arrival of warm weather in Calgary is a celebration in itself, hitting some local fests should definitely be on the ‘to do’ list for you and the kids. So take note of these family-friendly festivals and get ready to soak up the Vitamin D!
Cochrane Summerfest
When: July 25–26
Why we like it: Small town fests are not to be missed, especially when they include a bull riding event. With lots of fun activities for the kids including wagon and pony rides, this country festival is a great one to visit if you’ve got budding rodeo stars looking to get out of Dodge for a day. Be sure to visit Mackay’s Ice Cream Parlour for a cool, homemade treat before heading home.
Taste of Calgary
When: August 14–17
Why we like it: Who doesn’t love the chance to sample some amazing treats from some of Calgary’s best restaurants? With prices ranging from $1 to $5, it’s a great way to expand your kids’ palate (chicken and jellyfish tacos anyone?) without the restaurant dramas. Bring bathing suits and towels to cool off on the splash pad afterwards, or head into Prince’s Island Park to catch this year’s Shakespeare By the Bow production of The Comedy of Errors to celebrate its return to the park post-flood. Dinner and a show—it’s a true summer treat.
Whatever festival you choose, be sure to have your survival pack on hand: lots of water, hats, sunscreen, Kleenex and wipes (for those face painting mishaps), snacks—and of course, a bottle of bubbly at home for afterwards to celebrate surviving the day.
But that’s not all, no no, not quite. There are at least seven more places to go for some entertainment and a bite. Click through for some more of our summertime picks for Fun Family Festivals in Calgary.
