Long weekends are the perfect excuse to give thanks for our family. What better way to do so than by spending quality time together—outside of turkey time, of course. Here are some great ways to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday and each other.

Pumpkin Days at Kayben Farms
With events on every weekend in October, Kayben Farms provides outdoor fun for all ages, including pumpkin painting, fall crafts and the ever-popular wagon rides. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate, sit by the outdoor firepit and enjoy the beautiful foliage while the kids enjoy the giant slide. If you forget your snacks, Jo Jo’s café offers some delicious treats. It’s the last chance to enjoy the Sunshine park before it closes for the season.

IlluminASIA at the Calgary Zoo
Shed some light on the holiday and get a whole new perspective on zoo animals at IlluminASIA. The festival includes 366 giant, handcrafted  lantern versions of animals that are culturally significant to China, Japan, and India. Thanksgiving weekend focuses on Japan, and also includes free origami lessons, kimono and Ikebana displays. For a small fee, budding artists can try Cherry Blossom watercolour painting, create Japanese kites, test their skills at calligraphy or learn about the Japanese zodiac. Did we mention that there are a whole bunch of animals to see as well?

Whether you want to get the kids pumped over pumpkins, are looking for a show, or want to celebrate at a fall fest, here are 9 more ways to be thankful for the long weekend.
