Nature’s Tracks Forest Play

Forget about learning Mandarin. If you want to give your kids a leg up in this world, best get them back to nature. At least that’s what experts at the David Suzuki Foundation and the Canadian Parks Council recommend. In our helicopter parenting society, the days of letting kids roam wild outdoors has sadly disappeared. You’re not alone if you’ve found it hard to encourage active outdoor play. Here to help our kids discover the natural world in a safe way is Nature’s Tracks Forest Play.

This child-led, nature-based program teaches the 4 to 10-year-old set how to navigate the great outdoors, while instilling a sense of independence and responsibility. Led by professional guides (who are parents, too), Nature’s Tracks offers a wide variety of program options in Canmore. (Trust us, it’s worth the drive!) There are seasonal programs that take place every second Friday afternoon, summer camps (now taking registration) and special sessions for home schoolers.

During their eco-adventure, kids learn to feel comfortable in the woods through activities that range from identifying animal tracks, foraging, building campfires and hiking basics. At its core, Forest Play is a program of discovery that allows children to not only find their own solutions, but who they really are. If getting your kids unstructured time outdoors has been pushed down your to-do list, let them run wild at Forest Play.
