September is all about starting fresh. Find out how here.

Some call it back-to-school season. We call it back to reality. No matter what age your kids are, you’ve got new routines and new systems in place. It’s going to be a great year.

DO
Be ready
Why? Because it’s easy when we have all the tips you need for back to school. Don’t panic, just cross a few things off and you’ll be fine.

GO
To the Harvest Festival
Why? Because there’s so much to do at this free event. From field and wetland tours to kid’s activities and a farmers’ market, your family will have plenty of fun outdoors on the first weekend of fall.

GET
A jean jacket—for yourself
Why? Because you’re out shopping anyway…and if you’ve ever had a jean jacket, you know it goes with everything. If you haven’t had one, you’ve always wanted one. We like this groovy moto Gap jacket and this pricier J Brand version from eLUXE.

PLAY
In the school yard before school starts
Why? Because your child will get familiar with the best part of school. Even better, bring a friend who will be in their class for a playdate, if possible. It will make the first day a lot easier.

READ
How to Feed a Family by Ceri Marsh and Laura Keogh
Why? Because they are the authors of one of our favourite Canadian food blogs, Sweet Potato Chronicles, so we know they’ve got healthy and fun recipes that your kids will actually eat.

GREEN IT
Ditch plastic bottles and tetra packs at lunch time for the ZoLi Dash Straw Bottle
Why? Because we have a planet to save and there is no better time to teach your kids that than now.

SURF
khanacademy.org
Why? Because it’s a not-for-profit site with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone, anywhere. That means your kids (and you, for that matter) can do some drills, read some history and sharpen their minds before that first bell rings. It’s actually a fascinating site.

APP IT
Try Red Stamp
Why? Because you can share precious moments, like the first day of school, with friends and family who would otherwise not get to experience it. Just snap a pic of your kids, choose a ‘card’ and send it off straight from your phone via email or social media. You can even go old school and send it in the mail.

MAKE
Breakfast the most important meal of the day
Why? Because studies show that kids who eat a good breakfast perform better in school, and because we have some great recipe ideas to inspire you.

HELP
Bell Aliant Backpacks for Kids
Why? Because every kid deserves a backpack and basic school supplies this back-to-school season. With a goal to fill over 10,000 backpacks for school-aged kids in need, all of your contribution will go to doing just that—giving kids the tools they need to learn.
