Family Adventures in the East Village

You don’t need to be a hipster to appreciate the energy at Calgary’s hippest neighborhood. Brimming with art and culture, recently gentrified East Village is now linked to downtown via river pathways. Here’s a look at some not-to-miss experiences

A network of multi-use pathways and new bridges connects the East Village with Inglewood, Ramsay, Kensington and Eau Claire neighbourhoods. River Walk Pathways are wide enough to cycle side by side and you’ll find plenty of restful benches and public art to admire as you glide along. Ramble over to St. Patrick Island, a revitalized 31-acre natural playground complete with a fishing cove, wooded areas (ripe for hide and seek) and a boardwalk over naturalized wetlands.

The cultural hub is River Walk Plaza, where you might catch anything from food trucks to artisan markets to an outdoor festival (catch Opera in the Village beginning mid-August). If you’re in need of refreshments, the Simmons building is the place to be. Grab a java from Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, munch on organic baked goods from Sidewalk Citizen Bakery or soak up the sun on Charbar’s rooftop (possibly Calgary’s best patio).

Don’t neglect Fort Calgary to the east. This historical gem offers interactive exhibits, summer camps, and 40 acres of open space at the joint of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
