Do you have a child who tends to climb the walls—literally? One who treats the swing set like a sling shot and puts an ape to shame on the monkey bars?
Mom, meet Parkour, the fitness craze for anyone who loves flipping, flying and courageous climbing—especially kids. It was developed in the 80s by the French military to teach troops how to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible—meaning the world becomes your jungle gym. Breathe Parkour teaches kids how to do it properly—and safely—while having extreme fun.
Located in the Calgary Central Sportsplex in the NE, Breathe Parkour offers non-competitive classes from age 6 and up (stressing that there is no age limit so read: fun for the whole family). The classes are divided by levels, with the first level introducing your monkey to various rolls, running strides, vaults and hurdles and how to ‘fall’ or land properly. As levels increase, so do the skills, which include flips, hand spins, handsprings, tornado kicks and more.
Have a little one who is desperate for action? The Parent & Tots class (3 to 5 years of age) is exclusive to Calgary and gives you a taste of the later lessons, but take note—parents must participate as well.
Even better: Breathe Parkour does birthday parties. Tire out a rambunctious group of partygoers while sending them home with a new skill set. With three packages, parties are two hours, come with instruction and free time and access to the party room (but note, there’s a maximum of 15 participants).
So keep them balanced this year with a whole new way to play. You might swing into a new activity yourself!
We’ve got 11 more ways to keep them moving. Check out the rest of our After-School Classes for Kids in Calgary.
