With the arrival of snow comes the favourite age-old Canadian activity: tobogganing.
So ditch the shovels, throw on the ski pants, mitts and warm boots and head to the hills.
If you’re introducing your toddlers to tobogganing or you’re looking for something fun without the frenetic pace, our pick is the Royal Oak hill in the northwest.
With a large field surrounding the toboggan hill, we like that the Royal Oak hill is mostly free of trees and clearly marked, making it a great starting point for new sledders. It’s an easy climb for short (and longer) legs, and while it’s a favourite among the locals, it’s not as packed with older kids as some of the other hills. There’s plenty of parking nearby and once you’re done with your runs, take a trip to the nearby Royal Oak Shopping Centre for a bite to eat or a hot chocolate.
Good to Know: Before heading out, make sure you’ve got your gear covered. Helmets are highly recommended for young children and warm, waterproof mittens and footwear make the experience much more bearable.
If you’ve got a mix of ages, other popular hills include Confederation Park and St. Andrew’s hill (voted favourite toboggan hill in Calgary Sun’s 2012 poll).
This winter, the hills are alive’with tobogganing fun.
