Maybe you have a budding Tom Thomson or Emily Carr at home. Maybe you’re looking for a way to channel all that energy into something tangible’like a frame, perhaps.
Don’t just sign them up, take a class with them. A family acrylic painting workshop by Elemenopaint is a great way to connect with your kids through art.
Located in Ottawa’s west end, Elemenopaint is a pop-up art class that hosts events in community halls a few times a month. Dynamic, energetic mompreneur, Rochelle James, leads an intimate group of parents, each with one or two kids aged 4 through 12, in exploring the history, the process and the fun behind creating a work of art.
Parents work with their children to help produce a ready-for-the-wall canvas with a cool Canadian theme in just a few hours. We love the Flag Day workshop, which involves learning about the history of Canada’s flag and colours, then creating a variation of the famous maple leaf on an over-the-fireplace style canvas. In July, learn about Canada Day and create a mixed media representation of the Parliament Buildings’complete with fireworks overhead. Later this year, even the youngest artist will be stirred by the story of Maud Lewis, a folk artist who lived in a 10-by-12-foot cottage in the Maritimes, and will find inspiration in her colourful, simple style.
The result is a beautiful, lasting piece that becomes a memento of a shared experience, and maybe even the first step down a long road of artistic curiosity and creativity.
Good to Know: New workshops are announced on their Facebook page, where you can also request themes and set up personal events. Enrollment is handled through their website.
