Red poppies are blooming on jacket lapels, and the kids are asking what they mean. Sometimes it’s hard to help them understand what ‘remembrance’ is all about. Bear on the Homefront, a beautifully illustrated children’s book, tells the true story of the guest children who came to live in Canada during WWII. It’s all told from the perspective of ‘Teddy’, a beloved stuffed bear, and manages to talk about war in a way that is gentle, fascinating and educational. We’ll be sitting down to read both Bear on the Homefront and its prequel, A Bear in War, with our little ones this Remembrance Day. ($14.40, available at amazon.ca)
