If you’ve got a tween or teen in your family and you’re on the hunt to find something fun for them to do in Calgary, we’ve got great news. There are tons of great options for activities for your 10-17-year-old to do in the city, either with your family or with a group of their friends. We’ve rounded up 12 of our favourite activities to keep your tweens and teens entertained in Calgary – are these picks on your list yet?

Injanation

Injanation is a ton of fun any day of the week, but on Saturdays from 7-10 pm, the fun is exclusive for kids 10 and up at their Teen and Tween Nights. Each week has a different theme (think Tik Tok night, Minute to Win It and more), fun music, and neon lights. Tweens and teens will love the unstructured play, independent environment, and chance to meet and hang out with new friends while channelling their inner ninja.

Big Fun

The Big Fun facility boasts at least 25 attractions and over 30 000 square feet of inflatable fun that even teens will have a blast exploring. Kids 13 and older are allowed to play without parental supervision, but 2 parents receive free admission with one paid child admission.

The Rec Room

The Rec Room is an all-ages space daily until 10 PM. Teens and tweens will have a blast playing all kinds of games including driving simulators, VR games, shuffleboard, ping pong, pool, and redemption games. There are also over 80 arcade-style games (think Pac Man and Mario Kart). Don’t worry about hauling around your quarters – gaming cards can be loaded up and tapped to play, and also keep track of game scores and redemption points. As a bonus, anyone with a student ID will receive 15% off of food, game tags and game credits.

Westside Rec Centre

The Westside Rec Centre is popular with teens and tweens because there’s just so dang much to keep them busy there. There are registered programs like yoga, kickboxing, and group fitness, as well as sport-specific classes. There are also a ton of drop-in and volunteer opportunities to check out. For a fun way to spend a Friday night, kids between 10 and 17 are invited to participate in Youth Night, with activities taking place in the pool, gyms, and Youth Wellness Centre.

The Hexagon Board Game Café

The Hexagon Board Game Café in Kensington is the perfect spot for board game lovers of all ages. For just $3 an hour per person, patrons can check out just about any game they can dream of (in fact, they’ve got over 600 in their library!) If they’re looking for a recommendation or clarification on rules, the Hexagon staff is ready and waiting to lend a hand. For visitors planning to stay for a while, there are snacks and drinks available for purchase.

The Locked Room

If you’ve got a puzzle-loving kiddo in the family, The Locked Room is sure to be right up their alley. Whether you want to check it out as a family or send your teen or tween with a group of friends, The Locked Room has themed rooms at different difficulty levels, so they’re guaranteed to find one that’ll be tons of fun.

Escape 360

Although they have tons of awesome rooms perfect for escapees of all ages and ability levels, the Harry Potter-themed rooms (there are three!) are what’s piqued our interest. The difficulty levels in these rooms are a little harder, so this would be a great activity for older Potterheads or as a family activity for tweens.

Laser Quest

For a high-energy activity that kids, teenagers, and adults will all have a blast doing, Laser Quest has multi-level Laser Tag arenas complete with specialty lighting, swirling fog, and energetic music that set the mood for pure fun. They’ve even got three different themed escape rooms perfect for kids 12 and over to try out in addition to Laser Tag. Get the best of both worlds by completing one of the escape rooms in under 45 minutes to win a 2-4-1 pass to Laser Quest.

Have you ever heard of a Jellybean Dance? Community Associations throughout the city host Jellybean Dances, which are (you guessed it!) dances catered towards kids and tweens. Check your community association to see if they host Jellybean Dances and to find out more about when they’re held, what specific age groups are invited, and any special activities you can expect to find there (besides dancing, obviously).

Skyline Luge

Adrenaline-seeking teens and tweens are sure to love the thrill of speeding over 50 twists and turns on Calgary’s 1800-metre downhill luge track. 1 lap of the course (including the chairlift ride up) takes about 15 minutes and luge riders tend to spend an hour or two racing down the track. Visitors can also plan to extend their visit to Winsport and check out the summer bobsleigh, zipline, mini-golf, public skating and mountain biking. The luge track is closed for the season but reopens in May 2020.

VRKADE

Take a break from the real world and explore a virtual reality one at VRKADE. There are tons of different experiences to try out, including multi-player, adventure, casual, action and indie games, as well as two different VR Escape Rooms. Players with their own Steam accounts and their own VR games they’d like to try are also welcome to sign into their personal accounts to try games of their choice.

If your teen or tween has ever wanted to skydive but was turned off by the thought of jumping out of an airplane, iFly has the perfect solution. Believe it or not, anyone aged 3 to 103 is invited to take flight at iFly, as long as they’re in good health and can fit into one of the flight suits and helmets. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign a statement of risk and attend the classroom briefing. Prepare to step into the wind tunnel at iFly for an experience you definitely won’t forget!
