As a parent, there is nothing more important than the well-being and safety of your family. We’ve put together a list of safety classes, including infant first aid, CPR, car seat safety and more in Ottawa, so you can stay current on the best practices for keeping your loved ones safe and sound.
The Canadian Red Cross
redcross.ca
The Canadian Red Cross is one of the most well-known organizations in Canada offering Standard First Aid and CPR Courses, which cover everything from breathing emergencies to wound care (for infant, child and adult). There are numerous other courses available, such as Emergency Child Care First Aid and CPR, intended specifically for people looking after infants and young children in their homes.
St. John Ambulance
sja.ca
St. John Ambulance is another name-brand source of first aid and CPR training, with offerings similar to those of the Red Cross. What’s great about St. John is their youth classes, such as We Can Help, The Lifesaver and their ever popular, award-winning Babysitter course, which has your tweens and teens leaving with a wallet-sized certificate.
CPR with the Ottawa Childbirth Education Centre

If you’d rather host a CPR course in your own home, contact the Ottawa Childbirth Education Association. As long as you have five or more interested attendees, an instructor will come to you and teach you all about first aid safety for your infant. And if you choose instead to take the course at their location, babies in arms are welcome. They also have a great selection of prenatal classes.
Bringing Baby Home
ottawacea.com/baby_home
This hands-on parenting class runs for two full days over the course of a weekend (various dates are currently being offered at the Ottawa Childbirth Education Centre). This class helps educate parents about everything they need to know when they bring home their newborn. From changing diapers to bath time to infant CPR, this intensive course includes so much helpful information.
S.E.A.T.S. for Kids
seatsforkids.ca
S.E.A.T.S. for Kids is ready to bring you a little peace of mind, with courses and clinics to educate parents on all the ins and outs of safe car riding. We love their Community Courses; by request, a volunteer instructor will spend a free hour with your playgroup, empowering parents to install and move car seats with ease. Just as important, when someone tells you you’re doing it wrong, you’ll have all the facts you need to back up your choices.
National Capital First Aid
nationalcapitalfirstaid.com
With their 2-hour first aid course for parents, National Capital First Aid will teach you the skills you need to feel confident in how to help your newborn or child in an emergency situation. The course is easy to understand and while classes are often taught at the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre you can also arrange an in-home private session with a minimum of 8 people.
